  • Road Block: Planned Forest Road Closures Pose Unforeseen Hardships

    Standing on a mountain ridge, Bill Black, an elderly fisherman, pointed to a distant fishing stream and said, “The Forest Service has cut me off from those quality waters by closing a perfectly fine access road.”

    The road in question is an eastern spur off of Forest Service 144 near the northwest corner of the Valles Caldera.  He said his bad knee will not allow him to walk a steep road leading to the stream.  

    “I can get there in my truck, but not walking,” he said.

  • County to acquire L.A. apartments

    County Council decided last night to try to protect their downtown revitalization plan by acquiring the Los Alamos Apartments, which have been in foreclosure since May.

    The apartments sit in the middle of Central Avenue, on what is considered a prime piece of downtown property. Council passed the motion to acquire the property 6-0. Councilor Jim West was absent.

    As a result of the decision, the county will give Housing and Urban Development $75,000 in earnest money and authorize County Administrator Max Baker to execute the contract for purchase to acquire the buildings.

  • Cambodia's Hope draws accomplished volunteers

    Local engineer and worldwide mountaineer Chris Horley has joined a growing number of volunteers contributing their expertise to Cambodia’s Hope, a nonprofit organization for orphans.

    “Given the development of so many different projects as we grow, there are plenty of needs to be met so we have been developing a volunteer program over the last 18 months,” co-founder Marvel Kellogg said.

    Los Alamos National Laboratory is confronting one of the most alarming and most poorly understood implications of global warming.

    What would happen if the vast ice sheets of West Antarctica or Greenland, both already showing signs of climate stress, began to melt even faster?

    How long might it take for sea levels to rise? Would oceans swell by several meters and cause harbors and beaches to flood? What islands might become totally submerged?

    Rene Bass Feldman died peacefully on Friday, September 26th, after a brief illness. Rene was born in Brooklyn, NY, on March 12th, 1933. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1957 and a Master of Science degree in computer Science from the University of Pittsburgh in 1972.

    Rene was a staff member at The Los Alamos National Laboratory before moving to Chevy Chase, MD, where she was a staff member at the University of Maryland. In addition to science, she enjoyed cooking, reading and discussing all things interesting.

    The pace was swift and the atmosphere cordial at the candidate forum co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters and the American Association of University Women Wednesday evening.

    Community members filled the chairs and lined the walls of Fuller Lodge to hear the five candidates vying for three county council seats express their positions on a multitude of issues during the two-hour event.

    With temperatures dropping and cool weather quickly setting in, it’s hard to ignore the fact that winter is right around the corner.

  • Romney rallies for Pearce

    SANTA FE – Describing next month’s election as critical to America, former presidential candidate Mitt Romney urged voters to throw their support behind Rep. Steve Pearce, R-N.M., for U.S. Senate.

    Romney joined Pearce and his wife Cynthia at a campaign stop in front of Garcia’s Tires on Airport Road Tuesday afternoon.

    He has shown strong support for Pearce, even appearing at a breakfast fundraiser for him during the GOP National Convention while Pearce attended his father’s funeral.

  • County, NNSA reach agreement

    After 11 years of not having a contract, Los Alamos County and the National Nuclear Security Administration struck a deal to provide fire department services for the protection of Los Alamos County and Los Alamos National Laboratory.

    The contract signed Tuesday will provide the county and LANL with fire protection and emergency medical services for five years.
