  • Students, staff prepare to return to school

    Welcome back.
It seems like the last school year just ended and here we are ready to start again. Such a short summer and so much accomplished. With school set to begin, it is important to remember to watch for students as they walk or drive to school. It is a good time to slow down, especially when driving through school zones. The first day of school for students is Aug. 14.
As students and staff prepare for their return to school, I would like to thank the summer employees who did so much to polish up the classrooms and spruce up the grounds. Special thanks also to the LAPS Foundation for the classroom makeovers in E-113 (Biology classroom), Mountain Elementary Art room, and the Chamisa Elementary Outdoor classroom. Everything looks nice and is ready for your return. These projects were collaborative efforts and would not have been possible without the community’s generous donations of time and money to the LAPS Foundation.

  • Registration is under way at LAHS

Students and their parents lined up at Los Alamos High School Tuesday to get registered for the new school year. The official start of school is Aug. 14.

  • Top honors for LA history teacher

if you ask high school history teacher Allen Andraski how his summer went, odds are he’d say it went pretty well.
The Los Alamos School Board announced in June that the National History Day Foundation, an organization that promotes the learning of history through an annual, national contest, named Andraski as a recipient of the Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award.
The NHD Foundation grants the awards to teachers who inspire their students who take an interest in history beyond just what they learn in the classroom, and are encourage to present their findings in the state and national contests the NHD holds annually.
“National History Day firmly believes that quality teachers are the best educational tools that students have,” said National History Day Executive Director Cathy Gorn through a press release about the event. “The history teachers selected as Behring Award recipients are a credit to their discipline, and exemplify what it takes to truly be a quality educator.”
The contest rules are simple: Students can research a favorite history topic of theirs that complies with the contest theme and enter their findings into a local NHD contest, where hopefully, if all goes well, qualify for the national contest, which takes place at the University of Maryland at College Park, Md.

  • Lawyers file amendment in teacher's lawsuit

Attorneys for Zeynep Unal, a special education teacher who currently works at Mountain Elementary School, recently filed an amended complaint to a 2013 lawsuit she filed against the Los Alamos Public Schools, The Los Alamos School Board, Principal Kathryn Vandenkieboom and Superintendent of Schools Eugene Schmidt.
In her lawsuit, Unal alleges she was harassed and discriminated against by her former boss, Vandenkieboom, the principal at Aspen Elementary School.
Court documents said Vandenkieboom would discriminate against her by excluding her from formal meetings and making “insensitive remarks regarding the ethnicity and national origin of both the plaintiff and other persons as well (Unal is Turkish).”
Unal also claimed that Vandenkieboom made working conditions difficult for her, primarily by refusing her teacher’s assistants to deal with heavy class loads at the time, which occurred during the 2008-09 school year. Other teachers, Unal said, were provided aides. “...other teachers’ overloads were ameliorated within weeks of requests by other teachers,” Unal said in her report.
Unal also alleged that the harassment and discrimination she experienced caused her health problems as well as anxiety issues, which caused her to go on hiatus for the 2011-2012 school year.
