  • High court rejects part of Arizona immigration law--Video Extra

    WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court threw out key provisions of Arizona's crackdown on illegal immigrants Monday but said a much-debated portion could go forward on checking the status of suspects who might appear to be in the U.S. illegally.

    The court upheld the "show me your papers" requirement that police check suspects' immigration status. Even there, though, the justices said the provision could be subject to additional legal challenges, and they removed some teeth by prohibiting officers from arresting people on immigration charges.

    June 11

    Kenneth Vigil was found guilty in Los Alamos Municipal Court of speeding 11 to 15 mph over the speed limit after a trial. Judge Alan Kirk ordered him to pay $121 in court fees and fines.

    June 12

    Brian Halladay was found guilty in Municipal Court of having an expired license plate while parked. Kirk ordered him to pay $25 court fees and fines.

    June 13

    Marcos Ervies-Bojorquez was found guilty in Municipal Court of failure to use a seatbelt and speeding six to 10 mph over the speed limit. He was ordered to pay $192 in court fees and fines.

    June 4

    Bingqi Zhang pleaded guilty in Municipal Court for careless driving leading to an accident. Judge Alan Kirk ordered Zhang to pay a $46 court fee and enroll in a defensive driving school.

    Richard Carmen pleaded guilty in Municipal Court for driving without a license and to two counts of failure to appear in court. Kirk ordered Carmen to pay $238 in court fees and fines.

    June 5

    Steven Montano pleaded guilty in Municipal Court to jaywalking. Kirk ordered him to pay $146 in court fees and fines.

    Crystal Torrez Ramos Morales pleaded guilty in Municipal Court to speeding 11 to 15 mph over the speed limit. She paid $121 in court fees and fines.

  • Child rape case heads to court

    The case of alleged child rapist Stephen Geisik is advancing to District Court.

    The Los Alamos man’s preliminary hearing scheduled for Thursday was waived and Judge Pat Casados requested that case be bound over to the higher court. Geisik, 21, is charged with five counts of criminal sexual penetration of a minor under age 13 —a first-degree felony; and two counts of contributing the delinquency of a minor — a fourth-degree felony.

    The case will likely be transferred next Wednesday once the district attorney files the appropriate paperwork.

  • Sandia scientist pleads not guilty to data theft

    ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A former scientist at Sandia National Labs in New Mexico has pleaded not guilty to charges of stealing research to share with China.

    Jianyu Huang was arraigned Tuesday on five counts of federal program fraud and one count of false statements. He is accused of embezzling and sharing information from his position with the lab's Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies since 2009, according to a federal indictment.

  • Sandia scientist to be arraigned for stealing research

    ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The federal government says a former Sandia National Labs scientist stole research to share it with China.

    KRQE-TV reports Jianyu Huang will be arraigned Tuesday on several federal charges, according to an unsealed federal indictment.

    Huang, who was arrested over the weekend, faces five counts of federal program fraud and one count of making false statements.

    May 21

    Brandi Sandoval pleaded no contest in Municipal Court to following too closely resulting in an accident. Judge Alan Kirk found Sandoval guilty but deferred her sentence until Aug. 20 pending she not acquire any additional citations. She was ordered to pay a $46 fee.

    May 22

    Cody Duran pleaded guilty in Municipal Court to failure to display rabies tag, two counts of failure to appear in court, and two counts of having an animal at large. Kirk ordered Duran to pay $315 in court fees and fines.

    May 14

    Robert Groff, 81, of Los Alamos, pleaded not guilty in Los Alamos Municipal Court to shoplifting gloves at Metzger’s ‘Do it Best’ Hardware in Los Alamos. Judge Alan Kirk deferred Groff’s sentence for 30 days pending he not acquire any additional citations. He was ordered to pay a $41 court fee.

    Ronald Parker, 51, of Los Alamos, pleaded guilty in Municipal Court to not having valid registration after being stopped for speeding. Kirk deferred Parker’s sentence for 30 days and ordered him to pay a $46 court fee.

    Charles Sterba, 53, of Los Alamos, pleaded not guilty in Municipal Court for failure to use a turn signal. Kirk found Sterba guilty and ordered him to pay $71 in court fees and fines.

    May 7

    Chantell Murphy, 30, of Los Alamos, pleaded guilty in Los Alamos Municipal Court to speeding 11 to 15 mph over the speed limit, improper stopping, standing or parking, and for failure to pay. Judge Alan Kirk ordered Murphy to pay $167 in fines and court fees.

    Tulin Yu, 43, of Los Alamos, pleaded no contest in municipal court to speeding 6 to 10 mph over the speed limit. Kirk deferred Yu’s sentence for 60 days pending successful completion of a defensive driving course and received no additional citations during that time.

    Gloria Silver, 47, of Rio Rancho, pleaded guilty in municipal court to speeding 21 to 25 mph over the speed limit. Kirk ordered her to pay $196 in court fees and fines.

    April 30

    Noel Meyers pleaded guilty in Los Alamos Municipal Court to three charges of failure to appear in court or pay court fees, improper backing leading to an accident and failing to have a valid driver’s license. Judge Alan Kirk ordered Meyers to pay $551 in courts fines and fees.

    Tovah Martinez pleaded guilty in municipal court to speeding 16 to 20 mph over the speed limit. Kirk ordered her to pay $146 in court fees and fines.

    May 3

    Jacob Green, Los Alamos, pleaded guilty in Los Alamos Magistrate Court to two counts of assault as part of a plea agreement.
