  • Computer problems disrupt statewide voter system

    Los Alamos County Chief Deputy Clerk Sheryl Nichols said this afternoon that she has been unable to access the statewide voter system and that the error message she recieves indicates that the Secretary of State's Office failed to pay the licensing fee.

    "This is one of the major ways that we can prevent voter fraud," Nichols said. "I've tried to access the system and it says we don't have licensing fees to enter and I've received e-mails from other clerks in the state who have said they can't gain access either."

  • Raging winds spur power outages

    High winds with speeds reported at 35 to 40 m.p.h. Monday evening and early Tuesday morning caused scattered outages that affected several customers of the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities. Outages lasted anywhere from one hour to almost five and a half hours.  
    Electric linemen with the DPU received their first call at 5 p.m. Monday after wind broke a large tree branch and blew it into a customer’s electrical service connection.  The branch tore the service connection from the home rendering the structure without power.

  • Carrier’s career short but successful

    Shixin Li’s career as a Los Alamos Monitor carrier was short but certainly successful. In fact, his efforts awarded him Carrier of the Quarter.
    Li started delivering papers on Jan. 17. He will return to his home country, China, today, after spending some time with his son, daughter and grandchildren.
    Daughter Jun said, “After the excitement of seeing us, he wanted to do something.”
    Things fell into place, Jun said, when she was flipping through a newspaper and spotted an ad for carriers.

  • Trinity Site developer selection process revealed to public in a series of meetings

    Los Alamos County will host the following meetings to present information on the developer selection process and to gather public input.
    The meetings will be conducted by the Trinity Site Revitalization Project (TSRP) Advisory Committee, along with county staff. The first meeting, a special council presentation will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 25 at council chambers.

  • Public input needed in CIP process

    The County’s Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) Evaluation and Oversight Committee will hold the next set of public hearings on Phase 1 applications at 5:15 p.m. Thursday at council chambers.
    The CIP projects that will be discussed are:
    • Ice Rink Bathroom and Locker Rooms (CIP-048-1) - Study for construction of new locker rooms, ADA/Family style bathrooms and a storage area at the County Ice Rink;

  • Accusations fly during gubernatorial debate

    ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - With just over two weeks left until Election Day, New Mexico's gubernatorial candidates are using their first televised debate to woo any voters who have yet to make up their minds.

    Democratic Lt. Gov. Diane Denish and Republican Susana Martinez appeared this evening on Albuquerque television station KOAT. They talked about government spending, the sputtering economy and education.

    Denish went on the offensive early, calling Martinez a liar and accusing her of siding with big corporations

  • Wheel of Fortune try outs coming to Buffalo Thunder

    Wheel of Fortune’s Wheelmobile, the show’s promotional vehicle, will be in the area next weekend in search of good game players who are energetic, enthusiastic and fun.

    Viewers interested in being a contestant on an upcoming episode are invited to attend.

    Fans will have the opportunity to fill out an application, have his or her name drawn at random to play a simulated version of the game onstage, win unique prizes and be evaluated as a potential contestant for the broadcast version of the show.

  • State scores well on energy efficiency

    New Mexico moved to the head of the class in regards to energy efficiency, according to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy’s (ACEEE) 2010 State Energy Efficiency Scorecard.
    In the scorecard, states are ranked according to their energy efficiency policies and programs in a wide range of categories. The 2010 Scorecard designates three southwest states – Arizona, New Mexico and Utah – as “most improved” since the 2009 Scorecard.
