Garcia Richard, Rodgers spar at candidate forum

Rep. Stephanie Garcia Richard (D-Los Alamos, Santa Fe, Sandoval and Rio Arriba) and her opponent, Republican Geoff Rodgers, presented strongly contrasting views on the role of government at Thursday’s League of Women Voters candidate forum.

Rodgers kept coming back to what he called the two main issues: the need to encourage private sector growth through a “balanced and stable regulatory system” and the need to reform the tax code so businesses can “see a return on their investment.”

“We need the state legislature to understand it is the private sector and private investment that creates jobs,” said Rodgers, who last week picked up an endorsement from former U.S. senator Pete Domenici. “We can pass all the jobs bills that we want, but if the state continues to be a hurdle, we will remain where we are.”
