The conference was in Santa Fe and brought over 130 women from congregations throughout Northern New Mexico, who participated in a variety of humanitarian projects.

  • Christmas is arriving early in Los Alamos, as White Rock Baptist Church prepares to serve as a collection point for Operation Christmas Child. Soon, with the help of local volunteers, the site will be brimming with festively wrapped shoeboxes full of gifts.
Through Operation Christmas Child, the world’s largest Christmas project, Los Alamos residents are helping send shoe box gifts this year to more than 8 million children in 100 countries suffering from natural disaster, war, terrorism, disease, famine and poverty.

  • This is the week is when I fill the well. As you read this column, we are winging our way back from the 2010 Assets conference.
It is a week when I am, “among my people.” Much like an engineer attending an engineering conference, I have the opportunity to be surrounded by 1,500-2,000 youth and adults that are doing this work across the United States and internationally as well.

  • December will be a colorful month at the Betty Ehart Senior Center.
All five Los Alamos elementary schools will display two-dimensional, student artwork at the senior center. The artwork will be on display from Dec. 1-Jan. 5.
Students, parents, art teachers and seniors will join together from 1-3 p.m. Dec. 8 for an art show opening. Juice and cookies will be served on the lower level of the senior center. Artists will be available to talk about their work. The public is invited to attend the opening or may stop by and see the show during the month of December.

  • Various arts and craft fairs and shopping opportunities are held during the holiday season where adults can find gifts, but what about children? Shopping opportunities that are kid-friendly can be somewhat of a challenge. Luckily, Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church has a solution.
The Children’s Christmas Bazaar, which will be from 9 a.m.-noon Dec. 4 in TOTH’s Kelly Hall, 3900 Trinity Dr., is specifically provided for children in Kindergarten-6th grade.

  • The Los Alamos Pony Club will have a silent auction fundraising event on Dec. 5 in conjunction with the 12th annual Luminaria Walk at the Los Alamos Stables.
The group is in the process of collecting auction items for the event and would like to request assistance in making the auction a success by donating an item, gift certificate or money for purchasing auction items.
