Valentine’s Day is the holiday for candlelight dinners, chocolate and roses. It’s the day when lovers are to profess their love in sentimental verses whether written by their own hand or purchased in greeting cards at the local card store.
Valentine’s Day may seem like a day of shameless commercialism, but it’s true beginnings are rooted in the expression of romantic love during a time when romance was still very much alive.
Documented in Early History
Many researchers associate Valentine’s day with the ancient Roman fertility rite, Lupercalia, practiced between Feb. 13-15; however the first written proof appears in a poem by the father of English literature, Geoffrey Chaucer.
