  • The Los Alamos Animal Shelter, 226 East Road, 662-8179, has a great selection of on-site adoptable pets; others are in foster care with loving, temporary homes.
    All of our fully reconditioned adoptable pets are spayed or neutered, have their shots and are micro-chipped.

  • As we prepare to slide into February, can anyone tell me where January went?
    The asset for the month is social competencies and includes assets numbers 32 through 36.
    These assets are internal, and while you can have an effect on helping young people build these assets, a lot of it comes from within.
    I was impressed when the Los Alamos/Española basketball game last week included a performance by J.D. Weiss, playing the national anthem on the electric guitar. It was incredible.

  • The Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation, through the Los Alamos Employees Scholarship Fund (LAESF), is launching a scholarship for students who plan to return to formal education after taking a break. The first round of awards is scheduled for this spring.
    This new fund, called the Regional College/Returning Student Scholarship, will award scholarships to returning students pursuing a certificate or a two-year-degree at a regional college.

  • Sage Cottage Preschool is very appreciative of Los Alamos National Bank and Casa Mesita Thrift Shop for providing us funds to help support our low income families. We also would like to thank Northern New Mexico Health Grant Group for providing us a grant to pay for Health related education.

    “The Gardener’s Calendar” class with Martha Davis, will be from 7-9 p.m. at PEEC, 3540 Orange St. The class is an introduction to year round gardening activities. Pre-registration is required and costs $10 or $9 for members.
    Wednesday
    The Summit Garden Club will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a luncheon at White Rock Baptist Church.  All members and former members are invited. For information and reservations, which need to be in by Jan. 26, call Dorothy Crawford at 672-3315.

  • School supplies needed

    The Los Alamos High School National Honor Society is holding a “Supplies for Haiti” drive. The school supply drive will be from Feb. 1-28. There will be boxes at the high school, as well as in Mesa Public Library, the YMCA, Starbucks and Smiths.

  • George and Joyce Berzins celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a month-long cruise in the Mediterranean Sea and tour of Italy and Turkey. The family celebrated together at Disney World in December.
    George Berzins and Joyce Rasmussen were married Sept. 17, 1960 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Greenville, Mich.
    George is a retired physicist from Los Alamos National Laboratory where he was employed for 31 years. The couple has been residents of Los Alamos for 44 years, with a sabbatical year in New Zealand.
