  • Duke Snider, the Hall of Fame center fielder for the charmed "Boys of Summer" who helped the Dodgers bring their elusive and only World Series crown to Brooklyn, died Sunday. He was 84.

    Snider died at the Valle Vista Convalescent Hospital in Escondido, Calif., said the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, which announced the death on behalf of the family. Snider had been ill for months. His family said he died of natural causes.

  • Breaking news: David O. Selznick has announced that the long-delayed “Gone with the Wind” film production has a new screenwriter, “the Shakespeare of Hollywood,” Ben Hecht. Hecht is best known for other successful screenplays, including “Underworld (1927),” “Scarface (1932),” and “Nothing Sacred (1937).”

  • The Los Alamos Animal Shelter, 226 East Road, 662-8179, has a great selection of on-site adoptable pets; others are in foster care with loving, temporary homes.
    All of our fully reconditioned adoptable pets are spayed or neutered, have their shots and are micro-chipped.

  • It won’t take long for the Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation’s annual Great Conversations dinner to become a favorite in town. The public can join a group of tablemates and a speaker on April 10 at the Betty Ehart Senior Center for an informative conversation. The reception begins at 5:30 p.m.

  • The Los Alamos Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps precision air rifle team recently traveled to the Civilian Marksmanship Program air gun range in Anniston Ala., to compete in the 2011 Navy JROTC National Championships. The team of Jodi Cull-Host, Corrie Theesfeld, David Trimmer, Cory Aslin and John Gibson qualified sixth nationally out of more than 3,000 shooters and were among the top 12 teams qualified to participate.

  • Solon Pierce will bring his love for music to Fuller Lodge at noon Tuesday, as he performs during the Brown Bag Series concert.    Pierce was born in Plymouth, Wisc. and began playing piano when he was 10 years old.
    “My mother started my brother and myself playing piano,” Pierce said. “We started out having lessons before school at 7 a.m.”

  • Saint Dimitri Orthodox Church will host its 12th Annual Blini Breakfast from noon-12:30 p.m. March 6, a Sunday also called “Forgiveness Sunday.”  
    Blini Breakfast will follow the service of Divine Liturgy. Russian blini, a type of thin pancake, will be served in the traditional style with smoked salmon, herring, butte and sour cream. Vegetable caviar, eggs, cheese and a variety of berry preserves will be available as well.
