  • BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Queen Elizabeth II’s dad, Albert — the gentle, stammering Duke of York — never was meant to be king. And from Hollywood’s early honors this season, a drama based on his life never seemed destined as heir-apparent at the Academy Awards.
Yet “The King’s Speech” took a step closer to the best-picture crown Tuesday, leading the Oscars with 12 nominations and gaining momentum against the online chronicle “The Social Network,” which had previously ruled the awards season.

  • With so many restaurants in Santa Fe, it’s hard to pick just one. If your trips to the City Different only happen on weekends like mine do, weeding one favorite out from the list can be a task, so when it comes to trying a new place, it better be pretty enticing otherwise I’d just rather stick to what I know.
On a recent Sunday jaunt down Cerrillos Road, I noticed that Weck’s had opened right next door to Dion’s.

  • Complete list of 83rd Annual Academy Award nominations announced Tuesday:

    1. Best Picture: “Black Swan,” “The Fighter,” “Inception,” “The Kids Are All Right,” “The King’s Speech,” “127 Hours,” “The Social Network,” “Toy Story 3,” “True Grit,” “Winter’s Bone.”

  • NEW YORK — Fifty years after cosmic rays transformed him into a man ablaze, Marvel Entertainment has extinguished the Human Torch’s flame and his life, too, as the pop culture purveyor of super heroes and villains embarks on an ambitious story line that ends the Fantastic Four.
In the newest issue of one of the company’s longest-running comic books, Johnny Storm’s life is taken amid a massive battle that writer Jonathan Hickman has been scripting for a year-and-a-half. Illustrator Steve Epting did the art.

  • Flavor Flav opens his first
     chicken eatery in Iowa

CLINTON, Iowa — Rapper and reality TV star Flavor Flav is bringing the flavor of chicken to Iowa.
Flav’s Fried Chicken opens Monday in Clinton, Iowa. Flav has been there preparing for the launch and told the Clinton Herald he’ll visit often for promotions and even work the fryer.
Flav says it’s the first in a chain that stemmed from the 99 cent wings he served at Mama Cimino in Las Vegas. His business partner is the brother of that restaurant’s owner.

  • Master gardener Martha Davis will teach an introductory-level gardening class called “The Gardener’s Calendar” from 7-9 p.m. Feb. 1 at Pajarito Environmental Education Center, 3540 Orange St.
