  • NEW YORK (AP) — On a weekend in January of 2010, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios pivoted faster than even Spider-Man would dare.
A fourth installment of the hugely popular Spider-man franchise was planned, with director Sam Raimi and star Tobey Maguire returning to their trilogy of films that had earned more than $2.5 billion at the global box office and generally been hailed as a standard-bearer in big-screen comic book adaptations.

  • Some movies have an ability to make death — even murder — seem like a normal, non-horrifying, even hilarious part of life, which I understand that it is, but yet when it happens, it obviously doesn’t feel that way. It takes an amazing sort of film to give us that kind of realism.

  • This year, the Santa Fe Opera broke with tradition, presenting its operas at 8:30 p.m., instead of the customary 9 p.m. — this is a wise decision. Those attending Georges Bizet’s “The Pearl Fishers” will be treated to an impressive New Mexican sunset, seen through a large gilt frame that is an integral part of the opera’s impressive set.
From the very first note, it is apparent that the conductor, Emmanuel Villaume, has an excellent feel for Bizet’s music. His fluent, expressive style of conducting brought out a wide range of colors from a versatile and masterful orchestra.

  • SANTA FE (AP) — The stories are as diverse as the artists themselves: Afghan women who have lifted themselves out of poverty through a cooperative
that sells their traditional embroidery; a former cook for the Sudan People’s Liberation Army who now sells beaded corsets to help support her family and send her many grandchildren to school; and sisters from Kyrgyzstan who make hand-stitched felt and silk scarves using a family tradition that dates back some 300 years.

  • Reigning hot dog eating champs Joey Chestnut and Sonya Thomas, known as the 'Black Widow,' defend their record titles by downing massive amounts of hot dogs at the Fourth of July eating contest on Coney Island.
