    Ode to Wind

Oh how you spin and blow with a violent roar
and dance and swirl and slam the door,
how you come with spring and never quit,
how you just can’t seem to dial down a bit.
And, oh those dust storms that you bring
getting in my eyes so I can’t see a thing.
That grit that grinds between my teeth,
that musty air making it hard to breathe.
Oh how I love you mighty wind
with the dirt and dryness that you send
that cracks my skin so my knuckles bleed
building up that character that I need.
Maybe you aren’t all that bad
though you make me sneeze and itch.
Perhaps you’ll lift my house off the ground

  • Bell schedule at LAHS is causing some headaches

The Los Alamos Public School system needs to trim some spending from this year for next year’s budget.
One proposal for doing this is to change the high school’s bell schedule next year. This would allow the same bus drivers to bus for the grade, middle, and high schools, reducing the number necessary.
While this could definitely save money, it also could have negative side effects.
The controversy centers mostly around the planned A/A period at the end of the day.
This time is meant to replace the time currently allocated before school, for students to go in for help to a teacher in whose class they need it. This plan has definite advantages and disadvantages.

  • Lady Gaga was 'Born This Way' and endured

The stadium is dark, with the exception of the glow of phones and cameras ready to take her picture. The crowd is hushed with anticipation and excitement. Then, the beats echo over the speakers and the crowd starts screaming. Lights start to flash and huge screens flicker on. She steps out onto stage and her powerful, phenomenal, perfect voice rings around the stadium. The crowd is illuminated and thousands of people are jumping up and down in outrageous costumes, all inspired by her.
That’s right, Lady Gaga is performing at Madison Square Garden. Her fans, including myself, were able to see it on television.

  • Hair health is vital for the right look

The frizz, the tangles and the split ends. Ugh. Hair can really be a mess.
A bad hair day can be one of the worst days ever and looking like a lion’s mane on a special occasion is no fun. There is a way to fix frizz, tame tangles, and save split ends, though.
First of all, hair must always be kept healthy. Split ends must be cut off by a hairdresser when they emerge. Whatever you do, do not pull the split end apart.
Do not constantly dye your hair different colors. It may seem fun when you are a teenager, but it leaves your hair looking unhealthy after a few years, especially as you get older. Straightening your hair every day or every other day dries it out and causes split ends.

  • Opinion: Talking about conspiracy theories

Many times when something major happens, almost always when it involves national security, the conspiracy theorists come out of the woodwork. They all have some explanation of how it is not what it seems to be, and is a government plot to extend federal control. The recent raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound was no different.
There are two main classes of theories here. Some say that the raid was faked and others say that bin Laden had been dead for years. Quite frankly, both are ridiculous.

  • Fashion maven: Finding the simply suitable swimsuit

Hurray! Summer is almost here and I am dying to go to the pool. The only thing is that I do not have a fabulous swimsuit. No problem, I will just go to the store and pick out my favorite pattern and be done with it. No, no, no. That is definitely not the way to go.
I don’t think anybody I have talked to has ever adored swimsuit shopping. For girls, especially, it is a huge pain. Trying to shop for a bathing suit in a store can be difficult. The lighting in fitting rooms is usually far too bright and not beach or pool-like at all, which makes your skin look much paler than it really is.

  • Festival offers a touch of Celtic culture

Every spring, Balloon Fiesta Park opens its gates to host the annual Rio Grande Valley Celtic Festival. The festival is the only one of its kind in New Mexico and perhaps the entire Southwest.
This two-day celebration of everything Irish and Scottish offers something for everyone. There are traditional Irish and Scottish games, Irish dog contests, bagpipers, a rugby tournament and shops selling almost anything Celtic.
The Celtic games are one of the main attractions. They include strength games such as the caber toss, a game where a long-tapered pine pole is stood upright and hoisted by the competitor, who then runs forward attempting to toss it in such a way that it turns end over end with the upper end striking the ground first.
