  • The band marches on

Maybe you’ve heard them playing in the afternoon heat on Sullivan Field or better yet, seen them as they’ve faced rain and snow to perform a halftime show during Friday night football games.
Participating in the Los Alamos Topper Band, under the direction of Drum Majors Adam Sayer, Holly Erickson and Zane Meek, although not seen as a sport by many, requires skill.
Marching requires the ability to memorize field position. To move to that position, one must be able to balance while moving backwards on tip-toe — and just-for-fun, do it while keeping time in your  head and feet. Oh, and of course, play an instrument while moving. Think you’ve got it? Now try to do it all at once.

  • Fashion Maven: Hair gone wild: How to manage a bad hair day

Hair has an extreme effect on the way you look, so naturally I like to make my hair look good on a daily basis.
Ok, maybe not everyday, because everyone has bad hair days, right? But when I do have a bad hair day, I find that the phrase, “learn from your mistakes,” is true.
In fact, I have accumulated a few hair-styling dos and don’ts that you may want to know about.
You should always wash your hair before styling it, so let’s go over a few helpful suggestions before you start styling. Washing your hair every other day is ideal.

  • LAHS students break tradition

Los Alamos High School seniors did something completely different for Homecoming this year. Instead of trekking up LA Mountain to have a paint fight, they gathered at Urban Park to have the first-ever LAHS Powder Fight. Students in the Environmental Club worked with the Student Council to make this change, separating the senior painting of the LA from the paint fight. As a substitute, Environmental Club members mixed their own yellow and green powder, in the style of the Indian Holi Festival, with materials ordered from the Los alamos Co-op. Student Council recruited the fire department to send a truck over to soak students before the Powder Fight. Between 175-200 students participated in the event.

  • Fashion Maven: Winter clothes can be warm and stylish

I was not ready for the cold weather to arrive so soon.  I’m a warm weather person who could wear tank tops, skirts and dresses every day of the year if the weather allowed it.
Don’t get me wrong, I love to ski, but what about when it doesn’t snow and it’s still cold? What do I wear? I have endless combinations in my closet for a winter outfit, but putting them together into a cute, wearable and warm outfit is the most difficult part of getting through the cold stylishly.
I have a few essentials for every fall and winter outfit that must go in your closet this season.

    Oh What
    A Life

    “Oh what a life,
    the life of a teen.
You’re too young and too ignorant
    to know anything.
You can’t possibly know what love is.
You don’t know how it feels.
    Your dreams are too big.
You don’t know what is real.”
But I see all the problems.
    I realize life’s hard.
    I love him to death
    and can’t see us apart.
    My dreams may be big
but I’ll shoot for the stars
    and I’ll always have hope
    and strive to go far.
    “You act without thought,
    don’t consider consequence,
    doing things that seem stupid.
    You lack common sense.

  • Fashion Maven: Packing light, but packing right

There’s nothing like packing, to get you excited for vacation. Okay, I know it’s not exactly vacation time right now, but we probably all wish it was.
Even though it’s off-season, so to speak, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared, just in case you may all of a sudden be going on vacation to Hawaii in the dead of October. You know, just in case.
When I go on vacation, the thing that stresses me out is the packing. I am definitely an obsessive-compulsive packer. What if I need this, what if I need that? It takes me forever to pack and in the end, I always bring way too many clothes with me. And you know me, I love to shop no matter where I am.

  • Game’s latest effort falls flat

In 2002, the new face of “Gangsta Rap” was born in the form of Jayceon Terrell Taylor aka The Game.
Signed by “Aftermath Entertainment” founder and executive producer Dr. Dre in 2003, after acquiring The Game’s mixtape, Game caught many people’s interest. Fueled by drugs and gang violence, Game’s debut album “The Documentary,” debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.
After altercations with label-mate 50 Cent about who wrote the lyrics for “The Documentary,” Game left Aftermath records.
After two years of hard work, Game’s most recent studio album “The R.E.D. Album” was released
    Aug. 23.
