  • Get out and about to beat the summer doldrums

    Most teens all are so anxious for summer to start, that they often forget to plan things to do when summer actually begins, so they spend most of their summer inside, doing nothing at all. This can be the summer when things change.
    One thing to do this summer is to wake up earlier and get active. Try getting a group of friends together and go to Ashley Pond for a morning yoga session. Some other ideas are to go swimming at one of the local pools, go hiking or biking on one of the many trails in Los Alamos, or just go for a simple walk.

  • Review: No twist in the tide for newest 'Pirates' movie

    Just when you thought the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies were over, the fourth installment of the popular Disney pirate series hits the big screen.
    Jerry Bruckheimer produces the movie as he did with the previous three. Changes in the movie include the absence of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley’s characters, and the replacement of Gore Verbinski, who directed the first three pirate movies, with Rob Marshall (“Memoirs of a Geisha,” “Annie”).     
    “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” follows Captain Jack Sparrow played by Johnny Depp (“Once Upon a Time in Mexico,” “Secret Window”) on a quest to find the famed fountain of youth.

    The End of the Road

    The end of the game is near
    They may not win
    Paranoia begins to set in
    This is where legends are made
    The mamba gets the ball
    Maybe they can be saved
    The team’s future is in his hands
    You can’t hear anything over the turbulent screams of the fans
    Oh No! The Mamba gets double-teamed
    He fades away 3… 2… 1… he makes the shot
    But goes down hard
    He lays there not moving
    Slowly he gets on his feet
    With games to come, they will not 3-peat
    But instead they leave the door open to the Mavs

  • Shelter helps Los Alamos County animals

    Among the shining beacons of hope in Los Alamos is the County Animal Shelter. Located at 500 Knecht Street, the shelter staff is there to help the animals by finding homes for them.
    Animal Control officers drive around town, looking for dogs and cats that are loose. Many lost animals have tags with names and phone numbers, making it easy to find their owners.
    However, others are often found with only their rabies tag, indicating that they’ve been vaccinated for rabies.
    Owners can be traced using the rabies tag, too. When an animal is vaccinated for rabies, it is given a tag with a number on it.
    The Animal Control officers can call the clinic where the shot was given, and using the number,  locate the animal’s owner.

    Ode to Wind

    Oh how you spin and blow with a violent roar
    and dance and swirl and slam the door,
    how you come with spring and never quit,
    how you just can’t seem to dial down a bit.
    And, oh those dust storms that you bring
    getting in my eyes so I can’t see a thing.
    That grit that grinds between my teeth,
    that musty air making it hard to breathe.
    Oh how I love you mighty wind
    with the dirt and dryness that you send
    that cracks my skin so my knuckles bleed
    building up that character that I need.
    Maybe you aren’t all that bad
    though you make me sneeze and itch.
    Perhaps you’ll lift my house off the ground
