  • Opinion: Gearing up for Black Friday

Black Friday, a day when most stores have special offers for attractive items, has been around for quite some time. Customers are always excited to have new things at cheap prices, but on Black Friday, it’s a different story.
People camp out on the sidewalk next to the store just to be there earlier and pay for wanted items. The store is so filled up it looks like many ants coming out of an ant pile. There are many stores that have sales for this event including Walmart, Smith’s, Amazon, Best Buy, Target and many more with interesting sales. During the past decade, people have suffered from severe injuries or death. People have been trampled over, pepper sprayed and shot. This event wasn’t always called Black Friday.
Before, it didn’t have a name. Black Friday has always been on the Friday after Thanksgiving. This date is considered the first day of Christmas shopping. Black Friday got its name from retailers.
Traditionally, the Friday after Thanksgiving is the biggest shopping day of the year. This is when retailer’s profits move from red to black. Obviously, Black Friday is a very popular day for citizens and is also loved. Even though there may be some bumps and bruises, people still get some items.

  • Things to do when it’s cold outside

Los Alamos winters can be harsh, but that doesn’t mean Los Alamos residents can’t have fun. The ice skating rink is one of the top things to do during winter time. It opened last Friday, and only costs $5 per person. Public skating is open 1:45 p.m. to 7 p.m.
One could also choose to go skiing or snowboarding. The Pajarito Mountain ski area is open 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The season pass, along with the one-day admission cost, depends on age, but the prices are reasonable.
If you do enjoy the cold and the snow, you can, of course, build a snowman or a snow fort. As another outdoor activity you can get food coloring and write in the snow, make snow cones and make snow angels. And don’t forget snowball fights. These activities are free or very cheap, which just makes them even better.
But, if you are not interested in outdoor activities like that, then you can do simple activities with friends such as having a small get together, bake things, hang out at Starbucks with some friends, play video games, drink hot cocoa and spend quality time with your family.
Also, at the library they have several different teen activities. The movie theater does as well. If you are on any sports team or recreational team, you can always get together and have a gift exchange.

  • A DIY slime plush for Minecraft

Minecraft is a building game that can be played alone, or with multiple players. This game requires players to place and break various types of blocks in a three-dimensional gaming environment. This game, played on PCs, is free for download at the Minecraft website.
This game is becoming popular, making players want to collect Minecraft merchandise. Buying these collectables can add up to high costs, especially during the holiday season. To help lessen the pain in parents’ pocketbooks this season, follow the instructions below to ensure you have a Minecraft collectable at a low price.
Two sheets of fabric that are different shades of green (light and dark), one sheet of black fabric (we used a dark green felt), a hot glue gun with extra glue (or a sewing kit if you know how to sew), one piece of paper(8 x 11), scissors, rulers, two bags of cotton balls (large).
The total cost of everything: — a whopping $5! We got our fabric at a thrift shop for $2 and cotton at Smith’s for $3 and we already had everything else. Let’s get started.
    1. Make your standard 8x11 paper into a square by folding one corner to the adjacent edge and cut off the rectangle off (this step is often used in origami to get a perfect square). This piece of paper will be your first template.

  • Teacher Feature: Mr. A talks about his life as a teen

Allen Andraski, affectionately dubbed “Mr. A.” by his students is the World History and AP Human Geography teacher at Los Alamos High School. His love for music and a passion for history easily makes him one of the most interesting teachers. Mr. A. dwells in the depths of E-Wing and is one of the few teachers to have refused to leave his old memory filled room for a classroom in the new building. He is always interested in meeting new people and has a love for teaching kids about the world and its culture.

Last week Teen Pulse staff member, Owen Bradbury Aranda, took a stroll down memory lane with the teacher by asking him questions about the early days.

Q: Where did you go to high school?

  • Comic By Wilbur Wang
  • ‘Rush’ certainly Oscar worthy

Although motor sports are not uncommon in the U.S., Formula One is a sport that may seem foreign to many Americans.
It is definitely a more European sport but that doesn’t make it a spectacle unfit for American audiences.
Rush, written by Peter Morgan and directed by Academy Award winning director Ron Howard, captures the brutality and raw essence of this motor sport in the 70s, during the 1976 Formula One season.
Rather than simply making another shallow racing film aimed at car enthusiasts, Howard, known for films such as Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind, manages to take the exhilarating sport of F1 and bring to life one of the greatest rivalries in the history of the motor sport.
The film focuses more on the human aspect of racing and the lives and risks of the drivers themselves.
The two legendary rivals in the film, James Hunt played by Chris Hemsworth and Niki Lauda played by Daniel Brühl, are portrayed as very genuine characters: incredibly skilled, audacious, daring, but also very flawed. Hemsworth’s portrayal of Hunt is incredibly compelling and captures the “cavalier party guy” attitude of the British racing driver, and depicts him as an incredibly talented individual with smilingly great confidence who hides behind a facade of invincibility and arrogance.
