“No one knows for sure when Jesus was actually born. Why do we make so much of this holiday?”
    — James

This is not a new question. We have over the years addressed it and its corollaries; i.e., the debate over the actual date, the crass commercialism associated with Christmas and which parts of the Christmas story are indeed biblical and which are merely figments of our tradition.

  • Pilgrims, clergy come to Bethlehem for Christmas

BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) — The traditional birthplace of Jesus is celebrating its merriest Christmas in years, as tens of thousands of tourists thronged Bethlehem on Friday for the annual holiday festivities in this biblical West Bank town.

Officials said the turnout was shaping up to be the largest since 2000. Unseasonably mild weather, a virtual halt in Israeli-Palestinian violence and a burgeoning economic revival in the West Bank all added to the holiday cheer.

“Why is Jesus referred to as the ‘Alpha and Omega?’ These are Greek letters and He spoke Aramaic.” — Jack

First, remember that Greek was the most widely spoken language of Jesus’ day in His part of the world. Because the writers of the New Testament wrote in Greek, they would have used the Greek letters regardless of how Jesus might have said the phrase in His native tongue.

  • Reasons to light the menorah

On Chanukah, the main mitzvah, or commandment is to light the Hanukkah menorah at sundown. This is to remember the miracle that the oil that was lit on the menorah was only enough to last a single day but ended up lasting for eight complete days.
One of the traditions regarding lighting candles is to light oil like what was done in the Temple. However, we are not allowed to use a menorah that has seven branches like the one in the Temple –— which the Maccabees lit after expelling the Greeks from Israel.
