  • Bible Answers: Being faithful while listening to Lady Gaga

“If I want to be faithful to the Bible and to my faith, but I like to listen to Lady Gaga, can I do both?”— Katie

Before you can answer this, you have to engage in some serious thought and honest appraisal of what matters in your life.
You have to become a critical thinker. Ask yourself why you like to listen to her: is it the sound of her voice, the lyrics of her songs?
Perhaps you are entertained by her outlandish costumes and “out there” behavior.
Well, taste is what it is, but you should consider that your peers and media marketers largely shape pop culture entertainment preferences.

  • Los Alamos First United Methodist Church to host Hometown Nazareth

Los Alamos First United Methodist Church will host a summer children’s event, Hometown Nazareth from Aug. 1-Aug. 5.
Children will step back in time at Hometown Nazareth, exploring what it was like to live in the town where Jesus grew up. Kids will participate in Bible times marketplace, sing songs, play teamwork-building games, dig into Bible times snacks, visit Jesus’ mom, Mary, and collect Bible Memory makers to remind them of God’s word.
In addition, everyone will learn to look for evidence of God all around them through something called God Sightings. Each day concludes at Celebration — a time of upbeat worship that gets everyone involved.

  • Bible Answers: Why Jesus wept for Lazarus

“The Bible says Jesus cried when His friend Lazarus died. Why did He weep — didn’t He know He was going to raise Lazarus from the dead?” — Kathy

This story is found only in John’s Gospel (chapter 11), one of several powerful moments in the life of Jesus that are not recorded in the earlier gospels. John, most likely writing many years after Jesus’ death and resurrection, appears to have the aim of clearly portraying both Jesus’ humanity and divinity — an issue that was increasingly debated at the end of the first century and beyond.

  • Bible Answers: Life's troubles should be looked on with a measure of 'exultation'

“What insights might the Bible have for us as we come through another fire?” —John

We don’t need the Bible to remind us that life is full of unpleasant experiences, dangerous times and many interruptions of our well-made plans. Of course, the Bible is replete with accounts of such things because it is essentially the story of how humans and God interact in times of crisis.

  • 'Summer blockbuster' series begins

Hollywood comes to the Unitarian Church of Los Alamos this weekend as the Rev. John Cullinan begins his third annual “Summer Blockbusters” sermon series.
Using film as the chosen text for his sermons, Cullinan explores what people can learn about their lives from recent — and not so recent — popular movies.
Past sermons in the series have explored themes of fathers and sons in Tim Burton’s “Big Fish,” grace in “Where the Wild Things Are,” and xenophobia in “Avatar.”
This year’s series opens this weekend with Pixar’s 2009 animated movie, “Up.” The church will hold a “Dinner and a Movie Night” at 6 p.m. Saturday, with a community dinner.
