  • IMHM offers introduction to Roman Catholic faith

Each year, the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Los Alamos offers a program designed for adults who are seeking to know more about the living God through an understanding of the mystery Jesus Christ proclaimed. The program is titled, the “Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults.”
Participation is open to everyone, ranging from those who may just be curious to learn what the Catholic Church has to offer, to those who have already responded to the Gospel message and may have participated in other Christian communities, and those lapsed Catholics who may feel drawn to return to the church.

  • TOTH remembers 9/11 with memorial service

Gather in the fellowship of the worshipping community at Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church, at 8 a.m., 10:30 a.m., or 6:07 p.m. Sunday, when they will have a memorial for the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
Firefighters, police and their families from Los Alamos are invited to join in for worship, so the congregation can thank them for their regular devotion to duty, as well as for them being representatives of the hundreds of firefighters and police that died in the collapse of the World Trade Center Towers.
The women and men of the New York City fire and police departments, as well as numerous emergency medical responders, risked their lives to save others.

  • Don't assume all Baptists are alike

“Are those people in Kansas who picket soldiers’ funerals typical Baptists? If not, why don’t I hear ‘real Baptists’ denouncing their actions?” — Dan

Good question. I can speak personally to this one because it hits close to home.
That this group calls itself “Baptist” is highly unfortunate because doing so casts a long shadow over good folks who share the name. This “fringe” group does not appear to practice much of anything that resembles historic Baptist beliefs.
Many “real Baptists,” as you say, have indeed denounced the unconscionable actions of this group.

  • Responding to those with AIDS

“How might the Bible shape my response to people with AIDS?”—John

Basically, two perspectives appear in Scripture. In the ancient Hebrew texts, you will find that God apparently used plague more than once as a means of judgment on those who were in rebellion against Him (Num. 16:41-50; Deut. 28:58ff.) From this observation, you may conclude that AIDS sufferers are being punished by God and thus should be ostracized, even condemned. The close association of AIDS and the homosexual community has made this a quick and ready conclusion for many people over the last 30 years.

  • Thanks from IHM

To thank the county police and firefighters, Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish invited all police and fire fighters  and their families to be the honored guests during the annual picnic at the Church Aug. 7.  Above, Rev. John Carney presents St. Michael the Archangel medals to police and St. Florian medals to firefighters, following his blessing. He thanked them for all they do for the community on a daily basis and especially during  the Las Conchas Fire.

  • Bible Answers: Being faithful while listening to Lady Gaga

“If I want to be faithful to the Bible and to my faith, but I like to listen to Lady Gaga, can I do both?”— Katie

Before you can answer this, you have to engage in some serious thought and honest appraisal of what matters in your life.
You have to become a critical thinker. Ask yourself why you like to listen to her: is it the sound of her voice, the lyrics of her songs?
Perhaps you are entertained by her outlandish costumes and “out there” behavior.
Well, taste is what it is, but you should consider that your peers and media marketers largely shape pop culture entertainment preferences.
