  • 'Summer blockbuster' series begins

Hollywood comes to the Unitarian Church of Los Alamos this weekend as the Rev. John Cullinan begins his third annual “Summer Blockbusters” sermon series.
Using film as the chosen text for his sermons, Cullinan explores what people can learn about their lives from recent — and not so recent — popular movies.
Past sermons in the series have explored themes of fathers and sons in Tim Burton’s “Big Fish,” grace in “Where the Wild Things Are,” and xenophobia in “Avatar.”
This year’s series opens this weekend with Pixar’s 2009 animated movie, “Up.” The church will hold a “Dinner and a Movie Night” at 6 p.m. Saturday, with a community dinner.

  • Speculating on end of time

“We are wondering how Jesus viewed the end of time. Did He think it would be soon or far in the future?’”— Shannon and Kristina

The answer to your question is “both/and.” In His discourse on the end of time, Jesus’ words revealed two perspectives.
The first portrayed a sense of immediacy: “This generation will not pass away before these things happen” (Mt. 24:34). Jesus looked around at His closest friends and told them that in a short time, their world would come to an end. The fulfillment of this statement happened, in fact, within 40 years (A.D. 70), when the Romans as a consequence of Jewish rebellion destroyed Jerusalem.

“The president said recently, after the death of Osama bin Laden, that ‘justice has been done.’ From a biblical standpoint, was this truly justice or simply revenge?” —Terry

Bear in mind that biblical ethical content is prescribed primarily for religious reasons; i.e., it is directed toward people who desire to be faithful to God and to reflect His purposes in the world.
This means at least two things: legal codes and notions of justice appear differently at different periods of biblical history; and, “faith-based ethics” are more readily practiced by individuals than by groups — especially governments and nations.

  • Bible Answers: Hawking's view on the afterlife is a faith statement

“Stephen Hawking has made the statement that there is no life after death.  How might Scripture respond to his comment?” — Joe

Hawking’s statement is nothing less than a faith statement.
He has faith in his opinion.  He has faith in his ability to make pronouncements with a certitude that is based on nothing more than his own internal thoughts.
The writers of the Bible were no strangers to people who exhibited similar kinds of faith.

  • The connection between obesity and church

“I heard that there is a correlation between church attendance and obesity.  If this is true, what should we do about it?” — Larry

Sure enough, it’s true! A study presented at a recent meeting of the American Heart Association revealed that young adults who frequently attend religious activities are more likely to become obese than those who don’t.  Presumably this is due to the fact that religious gatherings traditionally include “comfort foods” that are high in fat and calories.
