  • Cole to serve as interim pastor in WR

Los Alamos is a remarkable place for a pastorate, in the opinion of Rev. Dr. Harry A. Cole, the incoming interim pastor of White Rock United Presbyterian Church.
Cole comes to the pulpit most recently from Westminster Church in Roswell and previously from the First Presbyterian Church and the First Christian Church in El Paso, Texas.
While in El Paso, he was also the executive director of INSIGHTS, the city science museum, an experience that piqued his interest in a pastorate in Los Alamos.

  • Ask Fr. John: Being close to God by going to church

Why do we stress church attendance? — JBA

The Church is literally the Body of Christ. This means that corporately, not individually, we are Christ himself, still incarnate in the world, doing His work.
If a person desires with their whole heart, one can unite to Christ and become a member of his body. Ideally, this is motivated by a simple desire to know God and to be where he is.
Out of this love for God comes the desire to follow his commands and to worship him. However, this happens in a context which is not our own.
Orthodoxy maintains the ancient Jewish belief that God is manifest in the temple.

  • Bible Answers: Explaining the difference between arks

“Why do we call Noah’s big boat an ‘ark’ because there is also the ‘ark’ of the covenant?” — Hunter

Your question opens the lid on an interesting discussion concerning boxes, boats and baskets.
To get to the bottom of it, you have to consider the meaning of various words in at least four different languages — Hebrew, Greek, Latin and English.
In the Hebrew Bible, there are three different words to explore. The one most commonly used for “ship” (such as the vessel Jonah sailed in) appears often.
A second, more specific term, used only twice, refers to Noah’s boat and to the basket used to float Moses on the Nile River.

  • Sharing beliefs about original sin

What do we believe about original sin? — E.F.

The meaning of the word “sin,” like many words, has changed with the trends of society.
“Sin” has become synonymous with judgement, shame, abuse, and hate. In the Orthodox Christian Church sin is about relationship; it is the failure to love according to God’s definition.
Orthodox use the term “Ancestral Sin” rather than “Original Sin.” Primarily, God is a loving God.
Orthodox reject the teaching that individuals inherit the guilt of Adam and Eve’s sin.
The primary inheritance that humanity receives from Adam and Eve is death.
