  • Local family heading to Africa as missionaries

The Blake Family, a local family of five, plans to enter full-time mission work with SIM (sim.org) in Niger, Africa. Carrie (Valentine) Blake, daughter of Allen and Judy Valentine, grew up in White Rock. She, along with her husband Sean and their teenagers Caitriona, Garrett and Derrick, will be leaving in August for French language training in Paris to prepare them for their mission work in Galmi, Niger.
The Blakes will join the SIM team at the Galmi Hospital in Niger. Sean will be the IT administrator/consultant for the hospital, working with Nigeriens to find culturally relevant solutions to complex technology issues. Key projects will include clean power, electronic healthcare records and mentoring Nigeriens to move into the role of keeping the IT side of the hospital running.
According to sim.org, SIM is a community of God’s people who delight to worship him and are passionate about the Gospel, seeking to fulfill the mission of Jesus Christ in the world.
Carrie will serve as the midwifery tutor for the hospital, with goals of introducing compassion into the childbirth paradigm and reducing mortality through addressing issues like obstructed labor and neonatal resuscitation.

  • Hospital scrambles to house patients during Pope visit

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Patients seeking long-term treatment at Philadelphia’s multitude of renowned specialty care centers might find no room at the inns this September, when a visit by Pope Francis during the World Meeting of Families is expected to bring hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to the region.
Hospitals that rely on an organization that seeks to find housing for such patients or their families are wringing their hands under the added pressure to identify hosts for people who ordinarily could afford a hotel room.
“Many of these patients cannot choose their time to have treatments,” said Rosana Tovar, a caseworker at Shriners Hospital for Children. “Right now we’re trying to figure out for that time in September when we’ll have international patients and if we can help with accommodations.”
Shriners, which provides specialized care to children with orthopedic problems, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft palates, has no housing of its own to offer patient families. The only other inexpensive option is area Ronald McDonald houses, but the demand for their housing there is far greater than the supply, Tovar said.

  • What does the Bible say about same-sex marriage?

“Is there anything in the Bible that might allow for same-sex marriage?” — Mark

The Bible is unabashedly straightforward: the ideal for marriage is heterosexual.
There are admittedly various forms of marriage in the Bible that may not meet the definition of what is often called the “traditional family” (e.g., multiple wives, concubines), close degrees of marriage (between half-siblings, cousins, et al.).
Furthermore, wedding “ceremonies,” as we moderns practice them, do not appear in Scripture. The arranged marriages and politically and religiously motivated unions found there are neither openly endorsed nor forcefully proscribed by Scripture.
This fact, however, does not sidestep the fundamental biblical understanding that God’s idea is one man and one woman for life in a “one-flesh” relationship (Gen. 2:24).
