  • Bible Answers: Learning to 'turn the other cheek'

“I can’t figure how to ‘turn the other cheek’ without being walked on.” — Katie

“Turning the other cheek” is a radical departure from our “normal” response to insult. Most of us are inclined to want to slap in return.
Why would Jesus say that the “normal” response (even if it is justified) should not only be resisted, but should be replaced with an offer of the other cheek — and why would he make this one of His important points in the “Sermon on the Mount” (Mt. 5:38-42)?
    Consider these truths:
Anger and revenge will get you nowhere. They only incite more anger and retaliation. Better, he said, to stop the anger cycle before it goes any further.

  • Bible Answers: Defining the term, 'Christian'

“The label is so tossed about by everyone that the definition has become muddled.  What really defines a ‘Christian’?” — Sharon

Let’s begin with a few comments about what does not a Christian make. One is not a Christian by virtue of keeping many rules, following a particular religious tradition or adopting the appellation in order to gain respectability.
One is not a Christian by dint of attending church, being “against” a host of sins or by being “for” good works, social activism or broad-minded humanism.

  • A look at the Orthodox Church and ethnicity

Why is the Orthodox Church ethnic? — M.F.

    Part 1
The Orthodox Church is not ethnic. However, it is true that a complex history in America has given the impression that it is for certain ethnic groups. This is far from the truth.
There are many who have never heard of the Orthodox Christian Church. Those who think of it as a place where Greeks or Russians go. It’s eastern, thus too foreign. This is a gross over simplification. To understand we must review history.
Christ’s saving work occurred in Israel, and thus, the church began in the east. All the ancient Orthodox Churches are the direct descendants and heirs of the ancient Christian gatherings.

  • Icon painting workshop offered July 9-14

An opportunity to participate in an icon painting workshop in the Byzantine-Russian tradition will be offered July 9-14 in Santa Fe.
The Prosopon School of Iconology, founded by Vladislav Andrejev, introduces the practice and theory of the ancient Christian art of icon-writing in the Byzantine-Russian tradition.
In the intensive, “hands-on” workshop, each participant will paint an icon using traditional techniques and materials.
The workshop is accessible to those with no art training or background, as well as previous students of iconography, artists and persons with art training, according to workshop coordinator Elizabeth Bezzerides.

  • Local researcher uses modern science to seek truth of Shroud

Los Alamos resident Robert Villareal is not only on a mission of faith - but also science.

In April, he traveled to Valencia, Spain where he gave a presentation and talk as part of  the International Congress on the Holy Shroud. The shroud is said to have been the burial cloth of  Jesus Christ.

According to a pamphlet from the event, “the Spanish Centre of Sindonology was legalized in the national register center for associations in April 1987.” The CES officially opened on Dec. 18, 1987 and celebrated its 25th anniversary this year.
