    To grasp the biblical perspective, we need to understand that taxes were very much part of life in first-century Israel. At that time, Judea was subject to Rome — and the empire was committed to collecting tribute from its conquered subjects. In the provinces, local citizens were commissioned to do this job. The tax collector could “legally” overcharge and keep for himself the difference.  Thus, the Jewish tax collector was disdained as an enemy collaborator and social pariah (Mt. 9:9-13; Lk. 19:1-10).

  • Saint Dimitri Orthodox Church celebrates Great Lent

    During the season of Great Lent, the community of Saint Dimitri Orthodox Church in Los Alamos has participated in traditions of the Orthodox Church. These traditions include Lenten fasting, meditation and mid-week Lenten Liturgy.
    Blini Breakfast, last month, is a meal with Russian blini, dairy and fish, which marks the last meal for non-Lenten foods until Pascha (Easter). This meal has been a tradition in Los Alamos for more than 10 years.
    Lenten Meditations this year are based on the writings of Saint Isaac the Syrian. Hieromonk John using the rare text, “The Ascetical Writings of Saint Isaac the Syrian,” has led the meditations.

  • RELC completes construction project

    Redeemer Evangelical Church has undergone many transitions in the past 30 years. The latest change has resulted in a new building at 2000 Diamond Dr.
    In the early 1970s, Grace Lutheran Church closed down and the property was sold to Ed Grothus, which became part of the “Black Hole.”
    The congregation disbanded and members moved on to other churches. One such church was Immanuel Lutheran Church in Santa Fe.

  • Saint Dimitri Orthodox Church lends a hand

    The overwhelming scale of the twin disasters has prompted the Japanese government to request international assistance. Locally, Saint Dimitri Orthodox Church will coordinate with International Orthodox Christian Charities and its local and ecumenical partners in Japan.  
    The efforts of IOCC are to discover unmet needs that will complement the assistance being rendered by the Japanese and other governments in their efforts to help the Japanese people in this most difficult time.

  • Ministry hopes to hula in Hawaii

    Every ministry has its own way of spreading its message, whether it’s through preaching on Sunday morning, or by hosting community events that the public is invited to attend. One group, however, is taking a different approach to ministering. They do hula dancing.
    The Hula Mai Ka Lani group is a non-denominational christian ministry out of Santa Fe that has been together for about 10 years and is led by their Kumu, or leader, Kalani Hawn. Though the group is based in Santa Fe, families from Rio Rancho, Pojoaque and Los Alamos are members. Michael, Michele, Morgan, Patrick and Dylan Irish are a Los Alamos family that is part of the ministry.

  • Jewish Center to host annual community Passover Seder

    The Los Alamos Jewish Center will have its  annual community Passover Seder at 5:30 p.m. April 19 at the Betty Ehart Senior Center. The event is open to anyone interested in attending.
    The Seder is a ceremonial dinner filled with rituals designed to celebrate the Jewish people’s exodus from Egypt. The Seder, which is Hebrew for “order,” ushers in the week of Pesach in which Jews refrain from eating Chametz.  
    The celebration of Passover commemorates the delivery of the Jews from years of slavery, ultimately culminating in the birth of the Torah, the Five Books of Moses, at Mount Sinai.
