  • Bible Answers: Defining the term, 'Christian'

“The label is so tossed about by everyone that the definition has become muddled.  What really defines a ‘Christian’?” — Sharon

Let’s begin with a few comments about what does not a Christian make. One is not a Christian by virtue of keeping many rules, following a particular religious tradition or adopting the appellation in order to gain respectability.
One is not a Christian by dint of attending church, being “against” a host of sins or by being “for” good works, social activism or broad-minded humanism.

  • A look at the Orthodox Church and ethnicity

Why is the Orthodox Church ethnic? — M.F.

    Part 1
The Orthodox Church is not ethnic. However, it is true that a complex history in America has given the impression that it is for certain ethnic groups. This is far from the truth.
There are many who have never heard of the Orthodox Christian Church. Those who think of it as a place where Greeks or Russians go. It’s eastern, thus too foreign. This is a gross over simplification. To understand we must review history.
Christ’s saving work occurred in Israel, and thus, the church began in the east. All the ancient Orthodox Churches are the direct descendants and heirs of the ancient Christian gatherings.

The workshop is accessible to those with no art training or background, as well as previous students of iconography, artists and persons with art training, according to workshop coordinator Elizabeth Bezzerides.

  • Local researcher uses modern science to seek truth of Shroud

Los Alamos resident Robert Villareal is not only on a mission of faith - but also science.

In April, he traveled to Valencia, Spain where he gave a presentation and talk as part of  the International Congress on the Holy Shroud. The shroud is said to have been the burial cloth of  Jesus Christ.

According to a pamphlet from the event, “the Spanish Centre of Sindonology was legalized in the national register center for associations in April 1987.” The CES officially opened on Dec. 18, 1987 and celebrated its 25th anniversary this year.

  • Bible Answers: Explaining the practice of foot washing

“Some churches still practice ‘old-fashioned’ foot washing. Is this a practice we should add to our modern expressions of faith?” — Jay

This is indeed a very ancient (and typically Middle Eastern) practice. A gesture of hospitality, foot washing was an amenity extended to guests visiting in someone’s home. Often the servant (and sometimes the wife of the home) would perform this service while the guest was reclining at the table (see Gen. 18:4; 19:2; 24:32; 43:24).
In the New Testament, we find a similar practice that appears to be common (Lk. 7:44; Mk. 1:7). Foot washing is mentioned in the list of criteria that characterize the faithful, serving widows in the church (I Tim. 5:10).

  • Bible Answers: Explaining the rules of fasting

“I have heard that Christians are supposed to fast. Is that still a valid practice for today? — Bret

The origins of fasting as a religious discipline are obscure. There is furthermore no clue in Scripture regarding where this practice arose. Wherever it does appear, it connotes abstinence of food for several reasons, including mourning (Ps. 69:10) repentance (Joel 2:12), and making urgent requests to God (II Sam. 12:16). It can be spontaneous or connected with important religious days; it can be personal or public (Esth. 4:3; Ezra 10:6; Neh. 1:4).
