  • Bible Answers: Explaining Melchizedek's role in the Bible

“So who is this guy Melchizedek and why is he important in the Bible?” — Stacy

Melchizedek is mentioned only a few times in scripture. In the Hebrew Bible, we find him in Gen. 14:18-20 (with Abram) and in Ps. 110:4, where he is a prototype of the Davidic messiah.
His origin is cloaked in obscurity. His place in Near Eastern history is equally opaque. What we can say is that his name means “king of righteousness.”
He is called also the “king of Salem” (Gen. 14:18), leading many scholars to identify Melchizedek with pre-Israelite Jerusalem.

  • Ask Fr. John: Understanding Pascha, part two

Why is Eastern Orthodox Christian “Easter” THIS Sunday? - JBA

Actually, Orthodox Easter was last Sunday. In the last article, we mentioned how the feast of Pascha lasts the entire week following Easter Sunday. To be more precise, it is as if the midnight service continues without breaking until the next Sunday.
We call this week after Pascha “Bright Week” because all is filled with the light of the Resurrection. Following Bright Week a shift occurs and we remain in the feast for another 33 days. That is until the Feast of the Ascension.

  • Bible Answers: Understanding the Mosaic system of law

“You wrote that the New Testament teaches that Christ is superior (and replaces) the Mosaic system of law, priests and the temple. Will that old, limited system be re-instituted sometime in the future?” — Nick

The Mosaic Law is at the core of the history of Israel. It shaped the identity of the nation, forming the basis of its deep religious traditions, politics and ethics.
The sacrificial and priestly system provided a means for expressing repentance, receiving forgiveness and restoring relationships with God and fellow man.
These functions were acknowledged for their importance by Jesus and by first-century Jews who had converted to Christianity (Mt. 5:17-20; 7:12; Gal. 3).

  • Calendars determine when to celebrate Pascha

“Why is Eastern Orthodox Christian ‘Easter’ this Sunday?” — JBA

This is a great but very complicated question to answer in a 300-word column. Suffice it to say, in some years, Easter does indeed fall on the same Sunday as in Western Christianity.
This year, Easter or Pascha as it is called in the east, is April 15. The service begins at 11:30 a.m.
A trivial point to address is about the word “Pascha.” It means “Passover,” as we believe that the events of Holy Week that culminate in Christ’s resurrection are the final Passover.

  • Self-defense as explained in the Bible

”I know about Bible verses that teach forgiveness, loving enemies, trusting God and not killing another human, etc. But is there a biblical justification for self-defense when your home and family are threatened?”—Robert

There are several ways to approach this question:
The “natural theologian” would claim that in nature, the instinct of all animals is to protect the nest and the young.
One deduces from this fact that self-defense is hard-wired into our existence.  This “instinct” is consistent with a biblical faith that places a high value on home and family.
