  • Pope: Now’s the time to end indifference, ‘false neutrality’

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Wishing for a year better than 2015, Pope Francis on Friday called for an end to the “arrogance of the powerful” that relegates the weak to the outskirts of society, and to the “false neutrality” toward conflicts, hunger and persecution that triggers exoduses of refugees.
In his New Year’s homily, Francis emphasized the need to “let ourselves be reborn, to overcome the indifference which blocks solidarity, and to leave behind the false neutrality which prevents sharing.”
After celebrating Mass, the pope came to the window of a Vatican palazzo overlooking St. Peter’s Square to offer new year’s wishes to a crowd of tens of thousands of tourists and Romans cheering him from below.
“At the start of the year, it’s lovely to exchange wishes. Let’s renew, to one another, the desire that that which awaits us is a little better” than what last year brought, Francis said. “It is, after all, a sign of the hope that animates us and invites us all to believe in life.”
“We know, however, that with the new year, everything won’t change and that many of yesterday’s problems will also remain tomorrow,” the pope said, adding that he was making a “wish sustained by a real hope.”

  • Utah ‘bleeding host’ wasn’t a miracle

SALT LAKE CITY — The Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City says a bleeding host reported after a communion wafer turned water red was caused by bread mold, not a miracle.
Officials said Wednesday that a scientist found the conclusive natural explanation for the wafer that turned water in an ablution bowl a dark red color at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Kearns.
The diocese appointed a committee to investigate after the host that went uneaten on Nov. 8 appeared to bleed after being left unattended for several days.
Committee chair Monsignor Francis Mannion says the church sets a high bar for proving a miracle and rules one out if an event has a conclusive natural explanation.
He says in a statement that miracles have occurred in the church’s history, but false claims undermine its credibility.

  • Hospital scrambles to house patients during Pope visit

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Patients seeking long-term treatment at Philadelphia’s multitude of renowned specialty care centers might find no room at the inns this September, when a visit by Pope Francis during the World Meeting of Families is expected to bring hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to the region.
Hospitals that rely on an organization that seeks to find housing for such patients or their families are wringing their hands under the added pressure to identify hosts for people who ordinarily could afford a hotel room.
“Many of these patients cannot choose their time to have treatments,” said Rosana Tovar, a caseworker at Shriners Hospital for Children. “Right now we’re trying to figure out for that time in September when we’ll have international patients and if we can help with accommodations.”
Shriners, which provides specialized care to children with orthopedic problems, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft palates, has no housing of its own to offer patient families. The only other inexpensive option is area Ronald McDonald houses, but the demand for their housing there is far greater than the supply, Tovar said.
