  • Mohler speaks at conference

Grace Vineyard Christian Fellowship is hosting a “Sons and Daughters of God” conference with Dan Mohler this weekend, July 12-14.
Mohler was formerly part of the “Power and Love” team that held conferences in churches across the country.
In 1995, he had a transforming encounter with God.
Since that time he went on to serve as an associate pastor for eight and a half years and now is traveling as an itinerant minister, sharing the transforming power of the gospel in a way that leaves others changed forever.
His inspirational messages on redemption penetrate the hearts of believers and motivate them to live righteous, compassionate lives. The public is invited. There will be no registration fee. Meetings will be at 7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Saturday and 9:45 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday.
Grace Vineyard is at 1183 Diamond Drive, across from the high school. For information, call Pastor John Sullivan at 661-2658 or 412-2518.

  • Oleska celebrates Native saints

The community of Los Alamos is invited to join in the celebration of Native American Saints with Rev. Dr. Michael Oleska, Orthodox priest and internationally known lecturer and writer.
Father Oleksa will be the guest of Saint Dimitri Orthodox Church and will celebrate Divine Liturgy 10 a.m., July 28 at the church located at 2270 39th Street in Los Alamos.
Recognized as an “Elder” by the Alaska Federation of Natives, Dr. Oleksa was awarded the Distinguished Public Servant award by the Board of Regents of the University of Alaska and honored by the Alaska State Legislature and the National Governors Association.
Father Oleksa will bring two important historical icons, one of Saint Jacob, the first Orthodox Native American Saint, which was part of the rite of Glorification of Saint Jacob. The second icon is of Saint Innocent, Enlightener of Alaska.
The presence of these two historical icons will highlight Fr. Oleksa’s visit.
Fr. Oleksa will also celebrate Vespers at 5 p.m., July 27 at Saint Dimitri Church to which the public is also invited to attend. Following the Vespers service, the public may gather for an icon showing and a question and answer period outside the service.

  • Social media distracts kids from religion

“How do you teach kids to ‘let the word of Christ richly dwell within’ them when there are so many electronic distractions?”

Sure enough, there is evidence that in this age of ubiquitous social media the incidence of narcissism, anxiety (“FOMO”) and preoccupation with meaningless “information” are on the rise. Many people (not just teenagers) are digital-dependent, obsessive and compulsive about their phones. It is quite possible that these distractions have negative implications emotionally, intellectually and spiritually.
