    Victoria Fitzgibbon, the daughter of Jim and Eva Fitzgibbon of White Rock, has made the fall dean’s honor list at New Mexico State University. She is a junior majoring in physical therapy. College of Education students who carried 12 or more hours with an average GPA in the upper 15 percent of the college were eligible for the dean’s list.

  • George and Joyce Berzins

    George and Joyce Berzins celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a month-long cruise in the Mediterranean Sea and tour of Italy and Turkey. The family celebrated together at Disney World in December.
    George Berzins and Joyce Rasmussen were married Sept. 17, 1960 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Greenville, Mich.
    George is a retired physicist from Los Alamos National Laboratory where he was employed for 31 years. The couple has been residents of Los Alamos for 44 years, with a sabbatical year in New Zealand.

  • Jack LaLanne dies at 96; brought fitness to masses

    LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jack LaLanne was prodding Americans to get off their couches and into the gym decades before it was cool. And he was still pumping iron and pushing fruits and vegetables decades past most Americans' retirement age.

    The fitness fanatic ate well and exercised — and made it his mission to make sure everyone did the same — right up to the end at age 96, friends and family said.

    Julia A. Kautz of Los Alamos made the scholastic honor roll for the fall term at Oregon State University. Kautz is a junior and pre-civil engineering major. To be on the honor roll, students must carry at least 12 graded hours of course work.

    Ten students from the Los Alamos area are among the 625 students on the 2010 fall semester dean’s honor roll at Eastern New Mexico University.

  • 'Band of Brothers' inspiration Winters dies at 92

    PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Even as Parkinson's disease began taking its toll on Dick Winters, who led his "Band of Brothers" through some of World War II's fiercest European battles, the unassuming hero refused, as always, to let his men down.

    Friends accompanied him to public events, subtly clearing a path through the adoring crowds for the living legend, whose Easy Company's achievements were documented by a 1992 book and HBO miniseries. His gait had grown unsteady, and he did not want to be seen stumbling.

    Navy Seaman Recruit Arturs Matulis, son of Anastasija and Christopher W. French of Los Alamos, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
    During the eight-week program, Matulis completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, fire fighting, water safety and survival and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.
