    Kaitlyn Renee McCranie of Los Alamos made the Seattle Pacific University 2011 Winter Quarter Dean’s List. Students on the Dean’s List have completed at least 12 credits and attained a 3.50 or higher grade point average.

    The Los Alamos Garden Club scholarship of $500 in memory of Liz Saunders, was awarded to Meredith Webster. She’s the daughter of Roxanne and Robert Webster and will attend the University of Minnesota.

  • Aspen students win top honors for Ronald McDonald House

    ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Elementary Level winner goes to Ms. Tammy Moore’s third grade class at Aspen Elementary in Los Alamos who collected 1.77 lbs per student.  They will receive a visit and magic show performance from Ronald McDonald later this month.  The Middle School Level winners are 7th and 8th grade students of Penasco Middle School’s Future Educators Association who collected 5.44 lbs. per student.  They will be recognized on an award plaque displayed at the Ronald McDonald House.  All participating schools will receive a certificate of appreciation.

    Diane Chen, CMFC, has qualified for Waddell & Reed’s annual Circle of Champions conference, recognizing the company’s top financial advisors. This year’s event will be in San Diego, Calif.
    The conference is conducted each summer by the asset management and financial planning firm, with selection based on an analysis of investments, insurance and financial planning sales generated by the advisor.
    More than 550 advisors qualified for this year’s event, out of Waddell & Reed’s national network of nearly 2,100 financial advisors. Chan will participate in the conference May 12-15. This is the eighth time that Chan has earned the honor.

  • Kidnapping captivated Las Vegas, NM, a century ago

    LAS VEGAS, N.M. (AP) — The two Colt six-shooters are relics of a bygone era and of a sensational kidnapping case that "stirred the city to its foundation" a century ago.

    The kidnapping of 2-year-old Waldo Rogers from his home near the New Mexico Highlands University campus generated relentless media attention with coverage in the New York Times and daily updates in the Optic.

    "Presented to Tim O'Leary by citizens of Las Vegas, N.M. April 1911," reads the meticulous engraving on the barrel of one of the silver-plated guns. The other is inscribed to A.A. (Apolonio) Sena.

  • People in the News 03-20-11

    Eric Edelmann, this month’s Rotary Student of the Month, is a senior at Los Alamos High School. During the Rotary ceremony, he named Diane Toups, a guidance counselor at the high school, as an adult who’s had an impact on him.
    He is highly active in the community, as president of the Natural Helpers Club and a leader among his peers, as a member of both the Los Alamos Youth Leadership and the high school student government.
