  • ESSAY: After 9/11, searching for American optimism

NEW YORK (AP) — Before the towers crumbled, before the doomed people jumped and the smoke billowed and the planes hit, the collective American memory summoned one fleeting fragment of beauty: a clear blue sky.

So many of those who remember that day invoke that detail. Last week, New York magazine, which has been running a 9/11 "encyclopedia" ahead of the 10th anniversary, added an entry for "Blue: What everyone would remember first." It chronicled nearly a dozen of the ways that Americans recalling 9/11 anchor their looks back with a reminiscence of blue sky.

  • Wallace Scholarhip awarded

Kiwanis recently awarded the first Jeannette Wallace Memorial Scholarship to Keanna Cohen. On the occasion of the presentation, Terry Wallace Jr., son of the late Rep. Jeannette Wallace, presented Kiwanis with a check for $22,975, all of the money that remained in the Wallace election fund. The money will be placed in a permanent fund for the scholarship so that it can be awarded each year. Jeannette had been a member of the Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos since January 1988 and her husband Terry is also a long-time Kiwanian.

  • Census: NM ranks 5th in proportion of gay couples

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — New census figures show that New Mexico has the fifth-highest proportion of same-sex couples in the nation.

The recently released analysis of 2010 Census figures shows that nearly 10 out of every 1,000 New Mexico households are headed by same-sex couples. That's a 73 percent jump from 2010.

The Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation Law, based at the University of California, Los Angeles, released the report..

Gary Gates, one of the study's authors, said the jump is likely a result of increased migration to the state and because more couples are identifying as same-sex households.
