  • Engagement: Glesmann-Courtright

    John and Geniece Courtright of Los Alamos and Lloyd and Cathy Glesmann of Pappillion, Neb. announce the engagement of their children, Riley Courtright and Kate Glesmann. The couple plan to be married in Omaha, Neb. on July 6, 2012.
    Kate is a 2006 graduate of Papillion High School and 2010 graduate of the University of Nebraska Lincoln. She is a social worker for KVC Behavioral Healthcare in Omaha. Riley is a 2005 graduate of Los Alamos High School and recently received a master’s degree in sports management from Minnesota State University in Dec. 2011. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the Unversity of Nebraska Lincoln in 2009. Riley currently works for the Alexandria (Minn.) Blizzard Hockey team.

  • First baby of 2012 in LA

    Rayanne Marie Martinez was the first baby born in Los Alamos this year She was born at 1:23 a.m. Jan. 1 at the Los Alamos Medical Center. Her parents are Pauline Peralta and Nicholas Martinez of San Ildefonso Pueblo. The Los Alamos Hospital Auxillary presented a $100 check to the mother

  • Claire Walker and Tom Watson

    Claire Walker and Tom Watson announce their engagement to be married in the early Spring  2012. The parents of the bride are Bob and Laurie Walker of Los Alamos and the parents of the groom are Steve and Karen Watson of Minneapolis, Minn.
    Claire Walker is a 2002 graduate of Los Alamos High School, received her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at Trinity University in San Antonio in 2006 and is currently a doctorate student doing auditory genetics research at the  University of Washington in Seattle.
    Tom Watson is a 2001 graduate of South High School in Minneapolis, graduated from Seattle University in 2005, and is currently a manager for Onvia, Inc. in Seattle, where he is involved in market research for government contracts.

    Jack B. Henderson Construction Company Incorporated has hired Mark Moreno, project manager and Kimberly Licano, administrative assistant to support their Arizona operations specific to the local microelectronics industry. Additionally Lionel Torrez, safety representative and Taylor Cardon, project manager have been hired to support JBH work in Los Alamos.
    J. B. Henderson Construction Company, Inc is a General and Mechanical Contractor serving New Mexico and Arizona.

    Lora Chastain of Los Alamos has accepted membership in Golden Key International Honour Society and was honored during a recent induction ceremony at Oklahoma State University.

  • Christopher Hitchens, militant pundit, dies at 62

    Cancer weakened, but did not soften Christopher Hitchens. He did not repent or forgive or ask for pity. As if granted diplomatic immunity, his mind's eye looked plainly upon the attack and counterattack of disease and treatments that robbed him of his hair, his stamina, his speaking voice and eventually his life.

    "I love the imagery of struggle," he wrote about his illness in an August 2010 essay in Vanity Fair. "I sometimes wish I were suffering in a good cause, or risking my life for the good of others, instead of just being a gravely endangered patient."

  • 3 women accept Nobel Peace Prize

    OSLO, Norway (AP) — Three women who fought injustice, dictatorship and sexual violence in Liberia and Yemen accepted the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize on Saturday, calling on repressed women worldwide to rise up against male supremacy.

    "My sisters, my daughters, my friends — find your voice," Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf said after collecting her Nobel diploma and medal at a ceremony in Oslo.

    Johnson Sirleaf, Africa's first democratically elected female president, shared the award with women's rights campaigner Leymah Gbowee, also from Liberia, and Tawakkul Karman, a female icon of the protest movement in Yemen.

  • Wedding: McDonald-McCloskey

    Dennis and Susan McCloskey of  Los Alamos are happy to announce the wedding of their son Michael. Michael and Mariah McDonald of Albuquerque were married this fall at Lake Tahoe, Nev. Ceremony and reception were held at the Cal/Neva resort, lakeside at sunset.
    Michael’s best man was Robert McAtee. His groomsmen were Nathan Sandoval, Jason Rothrock, Dr. Brett Kothe, Colin Ford, Michael Sheffield and Cody Martin.  
    Mariah and Michael are 2006 graduates of NMSU.  Mariah is a recreation facility manager for the town of Truckee-Donner, Calif. Michael is a PGA golf professional and marketing assistant for the Championship Golf Course in Incline Village-Tahoe, Nev. The couple live in Incline Village.

    Army Pvt. Wade A. Archuleta has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.
    During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat and field maneuvers and tactics.
    Archuleta is the son of Patrick Archuleta of Los Alamos.
    He is a 2010 graduate of Los Alamos High School.
