  • Andy Griffith dies at 86

    RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Andy Griffith, who made homespun Southern wisdom his trademark as the wise sheriff in "The Andy Griffith Show" and the rumpled defense lawyer in "Matlock," died Tuesday. He was 86.

    Griffith died about 7 a.m. at his coastal home, Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie said in a statement.

    "Mr. Griffith passed away this morning at his home peacefully and has been laid to rest on his beloved Roanoke Island," Doughtie told The Associated Press, reading from a family statement.

     Army Spec. Kyle L. Hoff has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

    Hoff is the son of Teresa Hoff of Escalon, Calif. and Alan Hoff of Albuquerque.

    He is a 2003 graduate of Los Alamos High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 2008 from Jacksonville State University, Ala.

    Laura Inkret, of Los Alamos, graduated from Fort Lewis College April 28, 2012. She received a bachelor’s degree exercise science-physiology option.

  • Calhoun awarded Eagle Scout rank

    Steven Calhoun, a 15-year-old sophomore at Los Alamos High School, and son of Michael and Sharon Calhoun, completed his Eagle Board of Review on April 22 and was formally awarded the Eagle Scout rank at a Court of Honor held at Fuller Lodge on June 10.  Calhoun is a member of Boy Scout Troop 22, chartered by the Knights of Columbus Council #3137. Established in October 1918, Troop 22 is the third-oldest continuously chartered troop in the United States.
    Calhoun entered scouting as a cub scout in Pack 229 in 2004, earned his Arrow of Light in March 2008, and joined Troop 22 immediately afterwards.

    James Coburn, son of Martha Perkins of Santa Fe and Steven Coburn of Los Alamos, has been named to the academic honor roll for bloc four and five of the current school year at Colorado Timberline Academy.

  • Engagement: Michael E. Derr and Jenna Guitar

    Ed and Tina Derr, Kathleen and Hunt Guitar and Buddy and Elsie West, the parents of Michael E. Derr and Jenna Guitar, are happy to announce the engagement and their July 7, 2012 wedding at the Spencer Theater in Ruidoso.  The couple met at New Mexico State University, where they both graduated in 2011, Jenna with a bachelor’s degree and double major in English literature and theater; and Michael with bachelor’s degree in theater and minor in English.  They will reside in New Paltz, N.Y., where Jenna is pursuing her master’s degree in English literature at SUNY New Paltz.

    Michael Phelps of Los Alamos, has earned a degree in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

    Jeremy Robert Kasik, a 2008 graduate of Los Alamos High School, graduated with honors and distinction from the United States Naval Academy on May 29.
    Following completion of a master’s degree from George Mason University, Kasik will attend the Navy Nuclear Power School, preparing him for his future in the Navy Nuclear Submarine program.
