  • Sherman Hemsley of TV's "The Jeffersons" dies

    EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Sherman Hemsley, the actor who made the irascible, bigoted George Jefferson of "The Jeffersons" one of television's most memorable characters and a symbol for urban upward mobility, has died. He was 74.

    Police in El Paso, Texas, said late Tuesday that Hemsley was found dead at his home on the eastside of the city. A statement from police said no foul play is suspected and that the exact cause of death is pending.

    The Los Alamos Little Theatre presented a $1,000 scholarship check to Aidan Bradbury-Aranda at its annual meeting last month.
    Bradbury-Aranda will attend the University of Southern California, where he was accepted into the School of Cinematic Arts. The Los Alamos High School graduate already has an established film production company and plans to be a filmmaker or film editor.

    More than 4,200 undergraduate students at the University of Kansas earned honor roll distinction for the fall 2011 semester, including Maslyn Locke, of Los Alamos. Locke is a graduate of Los Alamos High School and is a junior in behavioral neuroscience and pre-design. She was named to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences 2012 spring honor roll.

  • Stephen Covey, '7 Habits' author, dies at 79

    SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Stephen R. Covey, author of "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" as well as several other books that together have sold millions of copies, has died. He was 79.

    In a statement sent to employees of a Utah consulting firm Covey co-founded, his family said the writer and motivational speaker died at a hospital in Idaho Falls, Idaho, early Monday due to complications from a bicycle accident in April.

    "In his final hours, he was surrounded by his loving wife and each one of his children and their spouses, just as he always wanted," the family said.

    Jessica Mietz of Los Alamos, received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Luther College, May 20.

    Alyssa Schreiber graduated from the Adams State University, Alamosa, Colo., with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing. She was also listed on the president’s honor roll for the fall 2011 semester. Students must have earned at least at least a 3.5 GPA, and carried a 12 credit hour load to qualify.

    The University of Minnesota Twin Cities has named Meredith B. Webster of Los Alamos, to the spring semester dean’s list. Webster is a student in the university’s College of Liberal Arts.

  • Andy Griffith dies at 86

    RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Andy Griffith, who made homespun Southern wisdom his trademark as the wise sheriff in "The Andy Griffith Show" and the rumpled defense lawyer in "Matlock," died Tuesday. He was 86.

    Griffith died about 7 a.m. at his coastal home, Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie said in a statement.

    "Mr. Griffith passed away this morning at his home peacefully and has been laid to rest on his beloved Roanoke Island," Doughtie told The Associated Press, reading from a family statement.

     Army Spec. Kyle L. Hoff has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

    Hoff is the son of Teresa Hoff of Escalon, Calif. and Alan Hoff of Albuquerque.

    He is a 2003 graduate of Los Alamos High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 2008 from Jacksonville State University, Ala.
