  • People in the News 11-27-11

    Cody Martin, son of David and Beverly Martin  and brother of Zoe and Matthew Martin, recently passed the bar exam of the State of Texas and was sworn in as an attorney in that state.
    Martin, a 2003 graduate of Los Alamos High School, a graduate of Arizona State University and a graduate of the University of New Mexico Law School, is establishing a law practice in Houston.

  • Wedding: April Gregory and Matt Lavy

    Cindy Kelley of Los Alamos and Jerry Gregory of Española are pleased to announce the marriage of their daughter, April Gregory to Matt Lavy, son of Sharon and Arthur Lavy of Lamy.
        April received her bachelor’s degree at Colorado Tech University and works at Los Alamos National Laboratory.  Matt also works at Los Alamos National Laboratory. They share a love for riding motorcycles during their free time.

  • People in the News 11-20-11

    Jenny Lauren Tumas of Los Alamos is experiencing life in Canada this semester as a participant in Clemson University’s Study Abroad program. Tumas is majoring in communication studies.

    Kimberly Boerigter, a Hope College sophomore from Los Alamos participated in the Pull, one of the nation’s oldest college traditions. She was the moraler for the class of 2014 team. The Pull, first held in 1898, is an annual fall highlight at Hope. Boerigter is the daughter of Stephen and Kathleen Boerigter and is a graduate of Los Alamos High School.

  • Courtney Gartz-Roger Miller

    Courtney Jill Gartz and Roger Lucas Miller will be married on Nov. 19, 2011 in Bountiful, Utah Temple of the Church of Latter-Day Saints.
    Parents of the bride are Roger and Connie Gartz of Los Alamos. Parents of the groom are Jane and Kent MIller of Ogden, UT.
    Courtney received her bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University and Master of Education degree from the Unversity of Virginia and teaches elementary education in Virginia.

  • 11-11-11 brings hopes of good luck

    From China to New York, place your bets! Tie the knot! Make a wish!

    Friday marked the 11th day of the 11th month of 2011. Around the world, people celebrated the triple convergence of 11s with a splash.

    Some 1,000 ethnic Chinese couples exchanged vows across Malaysia on a date viewed as auspicious and romantic. In China, a special "1111" train started at 11:11 a.m. on the No. 11 line in Shanghai.

    "The numbers rhyme with one husband, one wife and one soul in Chinese and signifies a marriage that would last a lifetime," said nurse Pua Kim Giok, 25, who tied the knot with engineer Lee Chin Siong, 27. They were among 460 couples who got married at the popular Thean Hou Temple in Kuala Lumpur.

  • Boxing great Joe Frazier dies after cancer fight--video extra

    PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Joe Frazier needed the night of his career to knock down "The Greatest."

    Frazier knocked Muhammad Ali down in the 15th round and became the first man to beat him in the Fight of the Century at Madison Square Garden in March 1971, the first in a trilogy of bouts that have gone down as boxing's most fabled fights.

    "That was the greatest thing that ever happened in my life," Frazier said.

    It was his biggest night, one that would never come again.

    The relentless, undersized heavyweight ruled the division as champion, then spent a lifetime trying to fight his way out of Ali's shadow.

  • Wedding: Johnson-Edlin

    Hannah Johnson, daughter of Kenneth Johnson and Claudia Krause-Johnson of Los Alamos and David Edlin, son of Kent and Michelle Edlin of Pueblo, Colo., exchanged wedding vows on June 21, 2011 at the Hudson Gardens in Littleton, Colo.
    Hannah graduated from the University of California, in Santa Barbara and David graduate from Baylor University in Waco, Texas.  Currently, Hannah is a graduate student at the University of Colorado, School of Medicine in Aurora, Colo.  David is presently a graduate student at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo.

  • Former '60 Minutes' commentator Andy Rooney dies--video extra

    NEW YORK (AP) — Andy Rooney, the curmudgeonly commentator who spent more than 30 years wryly talking about the oddities of life for "60 Minutes," died Friday night, CBS said. He was 92.

    Just a month ago, Rooney delivered his last regular essay on the CBS newsmagazine.

    CBS said he died Friday night in New York from complications from a recent surgery.

    Rooney, also a syndicated newspaper columnist, talked about what was in the news. But he was just as likely to use his weekly television essay to discuss the old clothes in his closet, why banks need to have important-sounding names or whether there was a real Mrs. Smith who made Mrs. Smith's Pies.

  • Family: Hillary Clinton's mother dies at 92

    WASHINGTON (AP) — Dorothy Rodham, mother of Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and former President Bill Clinton's mother-in-law, died Tuesday at age 92 after an illness.

    The family said Rodham died shortly after midnight, surrounded by her family in Washington.

    The secretary of state cancelled a planned trip to London and Istanbul to be at her mother's side.

    Dorothy Rodham was a witness to her daughter's political victories and defeats. She avoided the spotlight and rarely gave interviews about herself or her daughter and son-in-law, the former president.
