    Aubrie Powell, a graduate of Los Alamos High School majoring in music composition, has been named to the Dean’s List for the spring semester 2014 at Baldwin Wallace University, according to Stephen D. Stahl, Provost. Students who receive at least a 3.6 GPA for seven or more graded hours in a single semester are named to the Dean’s List.

    Nolan Bell, of Los Alamos was named to Fort Lewis College’s Dean’s List for the Spring 2014 semester. Bell’s major is sociology/human services — criminology option. To be eligible for Dean’s List, a student must carry a semester GPA of 3.6 or better in no fewer than 15 credit hours of graded college level work and have completed all work for which they are registered by the end of the semester.

    Barbara E. Sherrill, of Los Alamos was among the recipients of 48 doctor of physical therapy degrees and 668 master’s degrees conferred by The University of Scranton at its post-baccalaureate commencement on May 31 in the Byron Recreation Complex. Sherrill earned a master’s degree with a major in human resources from The University of Scranton.

    The Los Alamos Garden Club will present its 2014 college scholarship to William Andrew Rich, a Los Alamos High School graduating senior. Rich is involved in many extracurricular activities such as football umpire NMAA JV; softball umpire, NMAA JV, middle school, Little League; baseball NMAA JV, middle school, Little League; snowboarding; mountain biking and is a member of the Los Alamos Airsoft team. He plans to attend the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs.

    The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi announces Cynthia Fuentes of Los Alamos, was recently initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Fuentes was initiated at The University of New Mexico.
    Fuentes is among approximately 32,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter.

    Sydney Sivils, a 2010 graduate of Los Alamos High School, was one of six recipients of UNM’s Clauve Award for outstanding seniors on
    April 4.
    The Clauve Awards are given in honor of Lena C. Clauve, the university’s first dean of women. The award is given for outstanding achievements in the areas of leadership, academics and campus involvement. To qualify students must be nominated by staff or faculty who have witnessed the dedication of exceptional students. Sivils will graduate, with honors, in May with a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing and Operations.

    Anna Kaiper, of Los Alamos, has received the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship for Summer 2014. She is in the Ph.D. program at the University of Minnesota.
    She is a graduate student in the comparative and international development education (CIDE) program track in the Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy and Development (OLPD).
    The FLAS Fellowships program provides allocations of academic year and summer fellowships to institutions of higher education, or consortia of institutions of higher education to assist meritorious undergraduate students and graduate students undergoing training in modern foreign languages and related area or international studies.

    Elizabeth Wendelberger, of Los Alamos, New Mexico, has been named to the dean’s list in the University of Notre Dame’s College of Engineering for
    outstanding scholarship during the Fall 2013 semester.

    Daniel Ahrens, a Los Alamos High School senior is participating in the American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program: “A Constitutional Speech Contest.” April 5-6 in Indianapolis, Ind.

    Air Force Airman 1st Class Daniel A. Nebel graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.
    The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
    Nebel, a 2004 graduate of Los Alamos High School, is the son of Kathleen and Richard Nebel of Los Alamos. He earned a master’s degree in 2011 from Wichita State University, Wichita, Kan.

    Aubrie Powell, of Los Alamos, is one of 10 student composers to create an original work of music for the distinctive dance production at Baldwin Wallace University dubbed, “fyoo zh en ‘14: new music & dance,” March 20-23. The annual event pairs 10 student choreographers with 10 student composers who create a “fusion” (fyoo zh en) of completely original movement and music.

    Maslyn Locke, of Los Alamos, earned honor roll for the fall 2013 semester at the University of Kansas, College of Liberal Arts. She is the daughter of Thomas P. and Karen Locke.

    Mei Liu, of Los Alamos, was named to the Honor List of Oxford College, the two-year liberal arts division of Emory University located in Oxford, Ga., for the 2013 fall semester. Liu also received an Associate of Arts in December.
