Tonight is Los Alamos Monitor Night at the Gordon’s Summer Concert Series.
For Los Alamos Monitor Night, the funk and jazz band, Big Sam’s Funky Nation will perform.
Big Sam’s is from New Orleans. The band describes itself as “a driving force of urban funk” and is fronted by trombone player Big Sam Williams.
Williams has gotten rave reviews for his trombone playing, being called “the top man on the slide trombone in the birthplace of jazz” by the San Francisco Examiner.
The band includes five regular members, including vocalist and guitarist Joshua Connelly and trumpet player Andrew “Da Phessam” Baham.
Big Sam’s will have a tough act to follow for tonight’s concert.
A Rolling Stones’ cover band, Satisfaction, attracted quite possibly the biggest crowd of the season last week at Ashley Pond.
Tonight’s concert will also take place at Ashley Pond.
The Gordon’s series for this year is beginning to wind down. There are only five remaining concerts this season following Big Sam’s Funky Nation.
Concerts are free and are sponsored by Los Alamos County.

Other than the opera performances, there are plenty of other events for opera lovers to enjoy this season.
Echoes from
“Cold Mountain”
A series of community events exploring adaptations of “Cold Mountain” and the Civil War
Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Jennifer Higdon’s first opera, “Cold Mountain,” is celebrating its world premiere on Aug. 1. Based on Charles Frazier’s National Book Award-winning novel, the opera depicts the transformative journey of two loves separated during the American Civil War. Yet the story of “Cold Mountain” is not confined to our stage.
As this summer marks the sesquicentennial of the Civil War’s end, Santa Fe Opera’s Education and Community Outreach department has teamed up with several organizations throughout Santa Fe to present “Echoes from Cold Mountain.”
The series uses literature, film, music, visual arts and scholarship to create a community dialogue that delves deeper into the Civil War, a pivotal conflict in the nation’s history. “Echoes from Cold Mountain” is a collaboration among Santa Fe Opera and the New Mexico History Museum, the Center for Contemporary Arts, Chatter and Collected Works Bookstore and Coffeehouse.
Book Club

The community flocks to Ashley Pond and other venues each year to take part in what some say is “the” event of the summer — The Gordons’ Summer Concert Series.
Reigning over Los Alamos for 26 years, it has always been organized by Russ Gordon. Rain or shine, the bands play on.
The series started in May with a bang — albiet, a soggy one — with a performance by the Eric McFadden Band, bringing rock and funk from the Bay area.
The next week, former Los Alamos resident James Carothers took the stage at the pond. Carothers now lives in Nashville and is on his way to country music stardom, but still takes time to remember his roots.
Each night is sponsored by one of the many organizations that take part in the concert series. KRSN night hosted the Band of Heathens, a rock and alternative group from Austin, Texas.
To kick off June, a double bill entertained the crowd — the Ryan Finn Septet, a local group teamed up with the Craig Martin Experience for a night filled with jazz.
Last week, the Jimmy Stadler Country Revue saddled up for their performance at the pond. The band is from Taos.
On Friday, the venue will change to Pajarito Mountain Ski Area, where Dan Bern, a folk and Americana singer/songwriter will take the stage. The show will be sponsored by the ski hill.
