Vicky (Rebecca Hall) wants Doug (Chris Messina), her handsome fiancé.
Cristina, fresh from a break-up, only knows what she doesn’t want. When the longtime friends happen upon the gruff-voiced Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) during a trip to Spain, even Vicky cannot resist a sexual adventure of the highest, PG-13 calling.
Thus begins writer/director Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” (2008), a mighty interesting look at how conventions and desires overlap and drift apart. Mesa Public Library will show the film at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, as part of the library’s Free Film Series.
“Vicky Cristina Barcelona” has flaws. The narrator waxes a bit too pseudo-sagaciously, the Woody-Allen-ness of the characters often threatens to overwhelm, and the characters don’t, ultimately, change as dramatically as I want them to. But the film succeeds, mostly because of Penélope Cruz.
The film’s strongest scenes feature Cruz as Juan Antonio’s former wife, Maria Elena, who, despite being the stereotypical “crazy ex-wife,” redefines many words associated with love, including “partner” (with whom?) and “commitment” (to what?).

The film “Geofish” will be presented at the Reel Deal Theater 7 p.m. Thursday. All proceeds will benefit the Cutthroat Trout Aquarium at the new Los Alamos County Nature Center, opening in spring 2015.
“Geofish” follows four fisherman turned filmmakers as they travel the length of Mexico in a vehicle that runs on cooking oil, in search of the best fishing spots in the country. Their journey will eventually lead them to fish across the entire planet, one continent at a time.
Armed with nothing more than fishing rods and cameras in hand, the “Geofish” series fishermen deal with a new obstacle around every corner and the determination of setting foot where few people dare to go, the angling quartet cuts their own path through some of the planets most rugged terrain on a mission to find the world’s greatest spots never fished.
Trout Unlimited of Santa Fe will have an informational booth at the event, and Pajarito Brew Pub will be selling beer and wine.
Tickets are $10 to be purchased at the Reel Deal Theater, or $12 at the door.

“Jerusalem,” a film adventure through the Holy Land for 3-D and 2-D giant-screen, IMAX® and digital theaters, with a particular focus on the ancient city of Jerusalem, has surpassed the $5 million mark in worldwide gross box office revenue, National Geographic Cinema Ventures (NGCV) has announced.
An original production from Cosmic Picture and Arcane Pictures, the 43-minute film is narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch (“Star Trek Into Darkness” and PBS’ “Sherlock”). “Jerusalem” has been shown in more than 45 theaters worldwide, giving audiences exclusive and unprecedented access to iconic holy sites and little-known parts of Jerusalem, including the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Dome of the Rock, as well as other areas in the Holy Land such as the Jordan River, Sea of Galilee and the mountain fortress of Masada.
“Jerusalem” was executive produced by the late Jake Eberts, legendary producer of movies such as “Gandhi,” “Chariots of Fire” and “Dances with Wolves.” Ferguson also wrote and directed “Jerusalem.” Large-format industry veteran Reed Smoot, ASC, was director of photography.
