    Volunteers needed
    The Fuller Lodge Art  Center needs up to a dozen new volunteers. Volunteers sit at the reception desk, greet visitors as they enter and handle any sales. Often visitors have questions about Los Alamos and the interactions with the volunteers become part of their vacation experience. Volunteers are assisted by Fuller Lodge Art Center staff members, as needed. Shifts available are 10 a.m.-1 p.m. or 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Saturday.     The L.A. County Republican Party will meet at 7:30 p.m. at the Hilltop House, third floor conference room.

    The monthly meeting of the Democratic Party of Los Alamos will be from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Mesa Public Library, Room 3. Featured speakers will be Sam Bregman, Letitia Montoya and Javier Gonzales, all candidates for state party chair. They will talk about their goals and plans for the party through the election cycle in 2012, as well as the past legislative session. All interested Democrats are urged to attend.

    Los Alamos Lions Club meets at 6 p.m. the first and third Thursday of each month. Those interested in the Lions Club should call Dennis Wulff at 672-9563 or email drwulff47@aol.com.

    Aspen, Chamisa and Mountain Elementaries, along with Los Alamos Middle School, are collecting non-perishable items for people and collars and leashes for pets as a community project and a student service project combine their efforts.

    Art openings
    An opening for, “Common Ground, New Art of New Mexico,” will be from 5-7 p.m. April 28 at the Convento Gallery on the Plaza de Española. The show will feature work by Joan Biordi, Denise “Dee” Boman, Kathryn Blackmun, Jan Brookshier, Helen Harding, Midge Tosten-Kilgour, Phil Kilgour, Asja N. Kornfield, Deborah Moll, Jim Romberg, Eliza M. Schmid, Corrina Stoeffl, Clare Cresap Villa, Mary Carol Williams.

    Fine tapestry artist Donna Loraine Contractor brings a solo exhibition of new work to Taos’ Weaving Southwest May 3-31. An opening reception and meet the artist opportunity for the show will be from 6-8 p.m. May 7 at Weaving Southwest, 106A Paseo del Pueblo Norte.

  • LA Happenings 04-21-11

    Music
    Lads of Enchantment, a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, invites the public to join them in song.  Besides the enjoyment of singing in harmony, their barbershop chorus and quartets experience the thrill of performing in the community. They meet at 7:15 p.m. on Thursdays at the United Church of Los Alamos, Graves Hall. Attendees will find their chapter meetings are well planned, musically satisfying and fun. Visitors are welcome.
     
    The Los Alamos Community Winds invites all interested musicians to join its upcoming concerts. No audition is necessary, but proficiency on a wind or percussion instrument is required. The LACW rehearses from  7-9 p.m. Tuesdays. www.lacw.org.

    Thursday
    Hosted by Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Energy Management Council, the Energy Town Hall and Exposition will be part of LANL’s Earth Day celebration. The town hall and expo will be from 8:30-11 a.m. at Fuller Lodge.

    Former students of Texas A&M University will assemble in Los Alamos on Thursday for the annual Texas Aggie Muster to honor all Texas Aggies who have passed away within the last year. For more information, contact Mullen at 662-7432, or evmullen86@aol.com.
