  • Chaperones needed for dance

    Parents of sixth and seventh graders are urged to chaperone the Six Sevies Dance at the Pueblo Gym from 7 - 9 p.m. Friday. Chaperones and their children are admitted at 6:45 p.m. Chaperones’ children will be admitted early and for free. Call Mary 662-9412 to volunteer. Big MAC is sponsored by the Youth Activity Center, a program of the Los Alamos Family Council.

    Art openings
    Fine tapestry artist Donna Loraine Contractor brings a solo exhibition of new work to Taos’ Weaving Southwest May 3-31. An opening reception and meet the artist opportunity for the show will be from 6-8 p.m. May 7 at the Weaving Southwest, 106A Paseo del Pueblo Norte, Taos.

    Jennifer J.L. Jones will exhibit, “Serenata,” new paintings at Hunter Kirkland Contemporary, 200-B Canyon Road, Santa Fe. An opening reception will be from 5-7 p.m. May 27. The exhibit continues through June 12.

    The Contemporary Clay Fair will be from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Santa Fe Woman’s Club, 1616 Old Pecos Trail.

  • LA Happenings 04-28-11

    Music
    Lads of Enchantment, a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, invites the public to join them in song.  Besides the enjoyment of singing in harmony, their barbershop chorus and quartets experience the thrill of performing in the community. They meet at 7:15 p.m. on Thursdays at the United Church of Los Alamos, Graves Hall. Attendees will find their chapter meetings are well planned, musically satisfying and fun. Visitors are welcome.
     
    The Los Alamos Community Winds invites all interested musicians to join its upcoming concerts. No audition is necessary, but proficiency on a wind or percussion instrument is required. The LACW rehearses from  7-9 p.m. Tuesdays. www.lacw.org.

    At the Los Alamos Hilltalkers Speech and Debate team annual banquet today, retiring coach Noel Trujillo will be honored for his contributions to New Mexico Speech and Debate and to the Hilltalkers.     Earth Day Talk: Foundation of Sustainable Energy, 7 p.m. at Fuller Lodge. Dr. Donald O’Sullivan from Los Alamos National Laboratory will give a free talk sponsored by Pajarito Environmental Education Center and the lab. LANL participated in the oil spill clean-up at the N.M. gas outage recovery — hear what advances are being made in greening our infrastructure.

    Los Alamos Medical Center’s community education series, “To Your Health,” will feature a presentation on the hereditary aspects of breast and ovarian cancer, by Dr. Kathryn Zerbach of Los Alamos Surgical Associates at 6:30 p.m. in the Large Conference Room. For more information, call 661-9165.

    The Fuller Lodge Art  Center needs up to a dozen new volunteers. Volunteers sit at the reception desk, greet visitors as they enter and handle any sales. Often visitors have questions about Los Alamos and the interactions with the volunteers become part of their vacation experience. Volunteers are assisted by Fuller Lodge Art Center staff members, as needed. Shifts available are from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. or 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
