    Art openings
    An exhibition of the Santa Fe Railway’s Couse calendar prints opens with a public reception from 1-4 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of the Couse-Sharp Historic Site, 146 Kit Carson Road, Taos. The exhibition of the 23 color lithographic prints of paintings by E.I. Couse that appeared on the Santa Fe Railway calendars between 1914 and 1938 will continue to be on view by appointment through mid-October.     Music
    Enjoy the music of Albania, Turkey, Macedonia, Bulgaria and Greece with Rumelia at 6 p.m. Aug. 6 at the Pyramid Café. A suggested donation of $7-$10 is requested.

    Lads of Enchantment, a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, invites the public to join them in song.  Besides the enjoyment of singing in harmony, our barbershop chorus and quartets experience the thrill of performing in the community. They meet at 7:15 p.m. on Thursdays at the United Church of Los Alamos, Graves Hall. Attendees will find their chapter meetings are well planned, musically satisfying and fun. Visitors are welcome.

    Los Alamos Lions Club provides important services to the community. One activity is the HELP program, which started 30 years ago. The program provides free transportation for medical treatment and appointments outside the county.  Patients are transported to Española, Santa Fe and Albuquerque.  If you would like to be a volunteer driver call Barbara Croley at 672-3618 or Lee Sullivan at 661-8037.

    Blue Star Mothers is seeking photos of area military men and women serving in the armed forces.  Photos will be displayed on the organization’s  “Wall of Heroes.” Call call Marilyn at  927-4341  or Lena at 927-2687 for more information.

    The Authors Speak Series presents “Novel Destinations,” a talk and slideshow by Robert Gibson, John Arrowsmith and Chris Ortega, on their trip to Mt. Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti, at 7 p.m. in the Mesa Public Library’s upstairs rotunda.

  • LAYL application deadline extended

    Los Alamos Youth Leadership is accepting applications until July 31 from high school students for the 2011/12 school year. 
    LAYL is a youth-driven project-oriented program. Applications can be downloaded from the Juvenile Justive Advisory Board and Family YMCA websites, or students can pick up an application at the Family YMCA.
