    Art openings

    Weaving Exhibit for Andrea Ortiz at Espanola Valley Fiber Arts Center, 325 Paseo de Oñate, Espanola, through June 30.

    Colette Campbell-Jones will display, “Stories From Underground,” visual reconstructions of oral histories from the coal miners in South Wales. The exhibit will run through July 30 at photo-eye Gallery, 376-A Garcia St., Santa Fe.

    Performances

    David Geist will perform at Pranzo Italian Grill, 540 Montezuma Ave., Santa Fe, from 6-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. $2 cover charge.

    The Democratic Party of Los Alamos will meet from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Mesa Public Library in Room 3. They will plan for several upcoming summer events.

  • Scholarships available

    Students who will be enrolled in medical school for the fall 2011 semester are invited to apply for scholarship funds.
    Students are eligible to apply if they are residents of Los Alamos County or have spent the majority of their lives as residents of Los Alamos County.
    Applicants are required to write a letter about their medical school background, fill out a scholarship application form and send an official copy of their undergraduate and medical school transcripts
    Completed applications must be received by Dr. Frederica Smith’s office by Aug. 15, 2011. Contact Dr. Frederica E. Smith, Los Alamos Medical Center, 3917 West Road, Los Alamos, N.M. 87544 or call 662-9400 for forms and information.

  • LA Happenings 06-09-11

    Music

    Lads of Enchantment, a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, invites the public to join them in song.  Besides the enjoyment of singing in harmony, barbershop chorus and quartets experience the thrill of performing in the community. They meet at 7:15 p.m. on Thursdays at the United Church of Los Alamos, Graves Hall. Attendees will find their chapter meetings are well planned, musically satisfying and fun. Visitors are welcome.
     
    The Los Alamos Community Winds invites all interested musicians to join its upcoming concerts. No audition is necessary, but proficiency on a wind or percussion instrument is required. The LACW rehearses from 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays. www.lacw.org.

    Steve Brugger, acting director of the Los Alamos Community Development department, will be the speaker at Lunch with a Leader. Lunch with a Leader, which is hosted by the League of Women Voters, is at 11:45 a.m. It will be at Central Avenue Grill. Brugger will discuss streamlining the planning and building process. Price for the lunch is $15, including tax and gratuity. No reservation is necessary.
