  • Get your entries in for the Heart Smart poster contest

    The Family YMCA and the Los Alamos Heart Council are co-sponsoring a poster contest for kids in kindergarten through sixth grade. The theme of this contest is “Be Heart Smart.” Posters/pictures may be in any medium (crayon, paint, etc.) Posters must be brought to the Y by Oct. 27. Winners will be notified Oct. 28 and will have their posters on display at the Health Fair on Oct. 29.
    Include name, address, phone number, school and grade. Winners may pick up their prizes at the YMCA booth during the fair or at the YMCA after the health fair is over. Posters will be on display at the Y through Nov. 6. Participants who wish to keep their posters must pick them up on or before Nov. 13. For more information call the Y at 662-3100.

    Today
    The White Rock Family Friendly Film Series presents, “Spooky Buddies,” at 7 p.m. in the White Rock Town Hall.

    The Los Alamos High School Olions will present, “The Insanity of Mary Girard,” by Lanie Robertson at 7 p.m. Oct. 20, 21 and 23 at Duane Smith Auditorium. There will also be a 3 p.m. show on Oct. 22. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors and may be purchased in advance at CB Fox, The Hill Diner or Otowi Station Bookstore. Tickets are also available at the door. The play contains sensitive subject matter and is not suitable for children.

    Art openings

    Hunter Kirkland Contemporary presents, “Current Work: Abstract Expressionist Oil Paintings,” by Peter Burega. An opening reception will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at 200-B Canyon Road, Santa Fe.

    Pecos artists James Touché, James Peterson and Linda Storm will celebrate the grand opening of their Canyon Road Gallery from 2-7 p.m. Saturday at 836 Canyon Road, Santa Fe.

    Zane Bennett Contemporary Art presents an opening reception for combined media, paintings and sculpture by Bruce Dorfman and Rachel Stevens. The event will be from 5-7 p.m. Oct. 28 at 435 S. Guadalupe St., Santa Fe. The exhibit will run through Nov. 18.

  • La Leche League meeting Monday

    La Leche League of Los Alamos will discuss “Why breastfeed your baby?” at their monthly meeting at 10 a.m. Monday in the Nursery at the United Church, 2525 Canyon Road.
    All interested, pregnant, or breastfeeding women are welcome to learn and share, through mother-to-mother support, the basics and benefits of breastfeeding.
    A lending library with books and audiotapes concerning childbirth, breastfeeding, parenting and nutrition is available.
    Nursing babies and toddlers who have difficulty separating are welcome.
    LLL is an international, nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing information, education, support and encouragement to women who want to breastfeed.

    The Los Alamos Genealogical Association will have its monthly meeting at
