    Wednesday
    Raptor Visit at PEEC, 3540 Orange Street. 7 p.m. Three new educational (non-releasable) raptors from the Santa Fe Raptor Center will visit. Educators will tell about the birds — a Swainson’s Hawk, Kestrel and Great Horned Owl — and allow the audience to view them up close. Family-friendly and free.
    Thursday
     A St. Patrick’s Day dinner will be at 5:30 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 1601 Trinity Dr. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children. For more information call 690-4620.

  • ‘Networks of Support’ slated for Tuesday

    La Leche League of Los Alamos will discuss, “Networks of Support” at their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the Teen Room at the First United Methodist Church, 715 Diamond Dr.
    All interested, pregnant, or breastfeeding women are welcome to learn and share, through mother-to-mother support, the basics and benefits of breastfeeding. A lending library with books and audiotapes concerning childbirth, breastfeeding, parenting and nutrition is available. Nursing babies and toddlers who have difficulty separating, are welcome.

  • LA Geological Society features Paul Bradley

    The next meeting of the Los Alamos Geological Society will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Christian Church, 92 East Road. The featured speaker will be Dr. Paul Bradley of Los Alamos National Laboratory. His talk is entitled, “The Mountains Less Climbed —Centennial Peaks near Leadville.”
    In 2008 and 2009, Bradley described climbs of the Fourteeners of Colorado to LAGS. Since then, he has expanded his climbing horizons to the Centennial Peaks, which are the highest 100 peaks in Colorado.

  • Arrowsmith to speak at MOWW dinner

    The MG Franklin E. Miles Chapter 229 of the Military Order of World Wars in Los Alamos announces John Arrowsmith, Los Alamos County utilities department manager, will be the guest speaker at the Chapter’s March 15, 2011 dinner meeting.
    The topic of Arrowsmith’s talk will be the El Vado and Abiquiu dam low-flow 3 MW turbine plan to develop the potential of the Los Alamos County hydroelectric generation installations.

    The Museum of Spanish Colonial Art celebrates “Women’s History Month” with a panel discussion on the colonial scholar, E Boyd, at 5:30 p.m. March 22 at the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, 750 Camino Lejo, Santa Fe. Four noted New Mexicans will form the panel. Dr. Marta Weigle is Associate Chair of the Department of Anthropology at UNM where she has taught for over 30 years.

    Lads of Enchantment, a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, invites the public to join them in song.  Besides the enjoyment of singing in harmony, our barbershop chorus and quartets experience the thrill of performing in the community. They meet at 7:15 p.m. on Thursdays at the United Church of Los Alamos, Graves Hall. Attendees will find their chapter meetings are well planned, musically satisfying and fun. Visitors are welcome.

    Bingo to benefit Right to Life will be at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Food will be available for a donation.

    The Barranca Book Fair is open to the community March 9 and 10 and March 14-16. The event is hosted by the Barranca Mesa PTO and items for sale will include books for pre-schoolers to 6th graders, and gift items. Visitors must stop at the office for a visitor’s pass. Hours of the book fair are8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Wednesday; 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday; 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. March 14-15; and 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. March 16.
