  • LA Happenings 04-07-11

    Music
    Lads of Enchantment, a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, invites the public to join them in song.  Besides the enjoyment of singing in harmony, our barbershop chorus and quartets experience the thrill of performing in the community. They meet at 7:15 p.m. on Thursdays at the United Church of Los Alamos, Graves Hall. Attendees will find their chapter meetings are well planned, musically satisfying and fun. Visitors are welcome.
     
    The Los Alamos Community Winds invites all interested musicians to join its upcoming concerts. No audition is necessary, but proficiency on a wind or percussion instrument is required. The LACW rehearses from  7-9 p.m. Tuesdays. www.lacw.org.

    The Sierra Club will host an open meeting at 7 p.m. in the upstairs meeting rooms of Mesa Public Library. The winners of the Sierra Club’s Environmental Award will present their posters.

     The Mesa Public Library presents “No Direction Home: Bob Dylan,” at 6:30 p.m. as part of the Mesa Public Library’s Free Film Series.

    March on Hunger
    Aspen, Chamisa and Mountain Elementaries, along with Los Alamos Middle School, are collecting non-perishable items for people and collars and leashes for pets as a community project and a student service project combine their efforts. To learn more about making donations call 661-4846. Donations are accepted at school locations through Friday. The Los Alamos Monitor, KRSN, AM 1490 and the Betty Ehart Senior Center continue the March on Hunger through the end of the month.

    Los Alamos Arts Council Brown Bag Performance Series presents pianist Bill Leland at noon at Fuller Lodge.

    Los Alamos Fitness Center and Trinity Natural health will have a free lecture at 2:30 p.m. This month’s topic will be, “Pantry Herbology,” presented by Dr. Bobbie Hall, M.H., N.D.

  • Animal Shelter 04-03-11

    The Los Alamos Animal Shelter, 226 East Road, 662-8179, has a great selection of on-site adoptable pets; others are in foster care with loving, temporary homes.
    All of our fully reconditioned adoptable pets are spayed or neutered, have their shots and are micro-chipped.
    Be sure to check out links to our many pets at the Friends of the Shelter Web site: www.lafos.org. You can also volunteer or make a donation.  
    Don’t forget our two-for-one, $35 Cat-a-Palooza adoption event is still going on for a limited time. The Dog Jog is coming up April 16, so mark you calendars and register online.

    The Pajarito Astronomers will have their first county sponsored Dark Night of 2011 at 7:30 p.m. at Spirio Soccer Field, Overlook Park. Weather permitting, the public is invited to come out, wander among the telescopes and star gaze. Mercury and Saturn will be visible. There will be a tour of the winter and spring constellations and there will be telescope views of double stars, star clusters, nebulae and galaxies. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.  Viewing will end before midnight. Call Steve Becker at 662-3252 for information.
