    Today
     The monthly Los Alamos county GOP meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the third floor conference room of the Best Western Hilltop House Hotel. The topics of the meeting will be the new Los Alamos County polling places, voter registration training and meeting of the GOP candidates running for local offices. All registered Republicans are invited to attend.
    Friday

    Art openings

    Zane Bennett Contemporary Arts announces a video installation and exhibition of prints by Santa Fe artist Mitchell Marti. Also showing are works that reflect Baltimore artist Soledad Salameé’s passion for the Earth’s natural resources. The shows open April 27 and continues through May 18. The reception will be from 5-7 p.m. at the gallery, 435 S. Guadalupe St.

    Concerts

    Lacuna Coil and Otherwise will perform at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Sunshine Theater. Tickets, $20, are available at sunshinetheaterlive.com.

    Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will perform at 7:30 p.m. April 28 at The Pavilion. Tickets, $27-$97, are available at ticketmaster.com.

    Music
    Lads of Enchantment, a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, invites the public to join them in song. They meet at 7:15 p.m. on Thursdays at the United Church of Los Alamos, Graves Hall.  

    The Los Alamos Choral Society is recruiting singers. Rehearsals are from 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays at the United Church, 2525 Canyon Road. All singers are welcome.

    The Los Alamos Community Winds invites all interested musicians to join its upcoming concerts. The LACW rehearses from 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays. lacw.org.

    LA Musicale Sunday

    Los Alamos music teachers will present their students in a Musicale at the University of New Mexico-Los Alamos at 2 p.m. Sunday. The concert is free and open to the public.
    The students who will perform are: Karin Ebey, Troy Makela, Sopahn Kellogg, Bethany Filer, Sabrina Delamarter, Devon Conradson, Jake Torrez, Joshua Chung, Jennie Gao, Katherine Skurikhin, Anya Palmer, Allie Cunningham, Joey Ladino, Grace Kim, Victor Kim, Ben Hanlon, Chase Kennard, Marin Kelly, Olivia Koo, Gabriel Holesinger and Jacob Holesinger.  
    The students are from the studios of Aejin Chang, Regina Doorn, Richard Hannemann, Marcia Hollabaugh, Juanita Madland, Frances Meier, Frances Naffziger, Kay Newnam, Greg Schneider and Janna Warren.

  • Sign up for Red Cross courses

    The Family YMCA is taking registration for its May 5 and June 2  First Aid, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification courses.  The courses, taught by American Red Cross certified instructors, are generally scheduled for the first Saturday of each month throughout the year.
    First Aid training includes the basics of wound care, bleeding control and bandaging and provides information about poisoning, sudden illness, and how to care for other injuries.
    CPR training includes how to respond to emergency situations, recognize the signs of a heart attack and provide care for an adult who stops breathing, is choking or whose heart stops beating.

    The next meeting of the Los Alamos Geological Society will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Christian Church, 92 East Road. The speaker will be announced at the meeting. The April 2012 field trip will be to the Jones Camp area near Socorro, April 21. We will meet at 9 a.m. in the Smith’s parking lot in Socorro. Plan on bringing rock breaking equipment, storage items to protect small specimens, a hand lens, sunscreen, water, snacks, lunch, eye protection, camera and whatever you need for a day in the field.     Celebrate National Poetry Month with a poetry gathering at 6:30 p.m. in the upstairs rotunda of Mesa Public Library.

    The Los Alamos Federated Republican Women will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. at the home of Janet Hall, 129 S. Monte Rey Dr. Harry Burgess, the new county administrator is the guest speaker. It will be an opportunity to meet him and extend a welcome.
