  • Building Kindness

    Building Kindness, a Habitat for Humanity affiliate, wants volunteers to help in the restoration of family homes. No skills necessary. Volunteers will be taught the safe use of power tools and equipment, while improving the living conditions of others less fortunate.  Skilled volunteers needed, too.     The monthly Los Alamos County Democratic meeting will be at 7 p.m. at Mesa Public Library. The topics of the meeting will be the upcoming events with congressmen, candidate updates and other developing news. All registered Democrats are invited to attend.

    There will be a Masonic Waffle Breakfast 7:30-10 a.m. at the Los Alamos Masonic Lodge, 15th and Canyon. Proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity’s 2012 Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter Work Project in Haiti. Price of the breakfast is $7 and $3 for children age six and younger.

    Annual Butterfly Count for Los Alamos. New Mexico butterfly guru Steve Cary will identify butterflies and discuss their habits and life histories. No experience necessary. Three habitats will be counted: mesa top, streamside and high altitude. Meet at Burnt Mesa Trailhead on N.M. 4 at 9 a.m. Bring close-focusing binoculars, water and sturdy shoes. Some nets provided.   • La Leche League meeting Monday

    La Leche League of Los Alamos will discuss “Nutrition and Weaning” at their monthly meeting at 10 a.m. Monday in the Nursery at the United Church, 2525 Canyon Road.
    All interested, pregnant or breastfeeding women are welcome to learn and share, through mother-to-mother support, the basics and benefits of breastfeeding.  
    A lending library with books and audio tapes concerning childbirth, breastfeeding, parenting and nutrition is available. Nursing babies and toddlers who have difficulty separating, are welcome.
    LLL is an international, nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing information, education, support, and encouragement to women who want to breastfeed.

    Join Los Alamos County Library’s Carol Meine for the opening of an exhibit in her long-running series of works on paper, “Drawing: X Marks the Spot,” from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Las Cruces Museum of Art.     Summer Family Evenings at PEEC: Sea Otters and the Challenges of Rehabilitation. Veteran marine mammal rehabilitator Esta Lee Albright will give an interactive presentation about her work as a rehabilitator of orphaned sea otters. She will share facts and insights gained from her 14 years of working at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and have many pictures of the pups. This presentation is designed for families and kids ages five and older. Free to member families, $5 for non-member families.
