    Poetry Gatherings with Jane Lin will be at 6:30 p.m. in the upstairs rotunda of Mesa Public Library.

    The Los Alamos Genealogical Association will meet at 7 p.m. in room 3 at the Mesa Public Library. The speaker will be Irma Holtkamp. She will speak on “Using Ancestry and Ancestry DNA to Research Your Family History.” The public is invited.

    The Los Alamos Federated Republican Women will hold their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. at UNM-LA, Building 2, Room 203. The speaker will be Frances Fernandes, president of SFFRW. Members are reminded to bring non-perishable food items and toiletries for charity donations. All Republicans are encouraged to attend.  For more information, call Donna MacDonald at 662-4001.

    The AARP local chapter  will host coffee at 9:30 a.m. in the classroom at the Betty Ehart Senior Center. A welcome to new retirees  and ideas for future programs will be part of this informal  gathering. For more information, call 662-8920.

    Raptor Migration in Veracruz. Come to PEEC to see the raptor migration through Veracruz, Mexico. Robert Templeton will provide photos and video of the annual “super-flocking” phenomenon, where half a million raptors fly by in just four hours. Free.     The League of Women Voters Lunch with a Leader will be at 11:40 a.m. at Mesa Library. The community is welcome to attend. The speaker will be Gary Leikness, principal planner of the Community and Economic Development Department. To attend and order lunch from the co-op for $10, call Karyl Ann Armbruster 661-6605 or email her at kaskakcayman@gmail.com for the menu selections. Orders for lunch need to be made by March 12. You do not need to purchase lunch to attend.

    Scholarship available

     

    The Jennifer Marie Fleming Memorial Scholarship fund is offering a $1,000 one-time scholarship to a student who will graduate this spring from Los Alamos High School. The award will be given to a student who possesses a strong sense of individuality and has demonstrated good character and a commitment to service and the welfare of fellow students. The applicant must follow and encourage a drug and alcohol free lifestyle among his or her peers. Additional information and application forms are available at the Career Resource Center at LAHS and must be postmarked by April 8.

     

    Geeks Who Drink

    Geeks Who Drink, pub trivia with a nerdy edge, will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Dixie Girl Restaurant, 1789 Central Ave. Remember the old Trivia Night at the Quark Bar in the Central Avenue Grill? Well it’s back, but it’s now called “Geeks Who Drink” and it will take place from 7-9 p.m.  every Thursday at the Dixie Girl, in the back room.   • Have lunch with a leader Feb. 14

    This month’s’ League of Women Voters Lunch with a Leader will be at 11:40 a.m. March 14 at Mesa Library.  The community is welcome to attend. The speaker will be Gary Leikness,  principal planner of the Community and Economic Development Department.
    Leikness has a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University and a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Oregon. He  moved to Los Alamos in June 2010, from Rexburg, Idaho, where he was planning and zoning administrator. Prior to that, he was a planner director in Lincoln City, Ore., Fort Worth, Texas and Provo, Utah. He will discuss the work he is doing to complete the comprehensive plan envisioned by our community.

    The March meeting of the Los Alamos Master Gardeners will be at 7 p.m. at the White Rock Town Hall. Discussion will be plans for the Hope Garden.

    Vegetable ABCs. This PEEC program will provide the knowledge necessary for growing food during every month of the year. Learn season-defying techniques to successful year-round gardens from horticulturalist Carlos Valdez.     It is Fish Fry time again at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Hall from 5-7 p.m. during Lent. The dinners are sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and proceed will benefit Nuestros Pequeños Orphanage in Honduras and other charities. Adult plates are $10 and have two pieces of cod, with coleslaw, and rice or French fries, plus a drink and dessert. Children may have one piece of fish or a grilled cheese sandwich with all the rest for $7 a plate.

    The Relay for Life Kick-Off waffle breakfast will be from 8-10:30 a.m. at the Masonic Lodge, corner of 15th and Sage streets. The menu includes waffles with berry toppings and whipped cream, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, grits, orange juice and coffee. The cost is $7 per person.

Climate scientist Nathan Mcdowell will review this evidence both for the Southwest United States and other locations globally, with data from the level of individual plants to the earth, during the Sierrans meeting at 7 p.m. in Media Room 203, building 2, at UNM-LA.

     Assets In Action will cure culinary sparks at the Teen Center at 3:15 p.m., making desserts with students to promote community partners as spring nears. Students can also make nominations for the Hubba Bubba Awards and get information about Cookies and Conversation.
