Santa Fe resident wins jazz award

SANTA FE — “Duke at the Roadhouse: Live in Santa Fe,” an album by jazz great and Santa Fe resident, Eddie Daniels and Roger Kellaway, recorded live at The Lensic Performing Arts Center, has been named “Best Jazz Record of the Year” by L’Academie du Jazz in Paris. Daniels traveled to Paris to receive the award, known in French as the “Grand Prix de l’Académie du Jazz,” in a ceremony at the Chatelet Theatre in Paris Jan. 14.
Released in June 2013 on IPO Records, “Duke at the Roadhouse” is a collection of songs by, associated with, and inspired by Duke Ellington, featuring Daniels on clarinet and Kellaway on piano, with Albuquerque-based cellist James Holland also playing on several tracks.
Daniels and Kellaway each contributed one original composition to the record. The album was recorded at The Lensic on October 12, 2012, in a concert to benefit the nonprofit New Mexico Center for Therapeutic Riding, which uses horses and horseback riding to enrich the lives of people with disabilities.
That concert was presented as part of the Lensic’s Community Sponsorship program, which provides assistance to local groups that wish to its fundraising events at the Lensic.
