The Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team finished strong at the Aztec Tiger Duals Saturday.
Facing some solid competition in their pool, the Hilltoppers pulled off a fourth-place finish at the 10-team meet, hosted by Aztec, one of the premier programs in Class 4A.
Despite having just seven wrestlers available heading in, Los Alamos finished second in its pool, which included Cleveland, Shiprock, Farmington and Bloomfield. Los Alamos lost only to the Bloomfield Bobcats, a newcomer to Class 4A this season, whom Hilltopper head coach Bob Geyer said could be a real threat for a state 4A title.
Bloomfield squared off against Aztec for the tournament title late Saturday.
The fourth-place finish at the meet — Los Alamos lost to Piedra Vista in the third-place contest to conclude the day — was a better finish than the team expected.
“Pretty good outing,” Geyer said. “We got some head-to-head wins over some 4A schools...to wrestle for third-and-fourth, I was really pleased with the team.”
Los Alamos was without the services of Brian Geyer, who’s expected to return to regular action this week, then had to pull Desmond Fellers out with an injury after two matches.
