The Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team picked up right where it left off. After a big showing at the Albuquerque Academy Invitational wrestling tournament Jan. 12, Los Alamos followed up with perhaps its best showing of the season. The ‘Topper grapplers finished fifth out of 13 teams in Friday’s Garrison Spencer Memorial Tournament duals competition. Not a bad finish, but not as good as its third-place showing in individual competition Saturday. The Hilltoppers finished only half a point behind Dove Creek, Utah, a half point that Hilltopper head coach Eric Sorenson said his team lost on an incorrect takedown award in the 189-pound championship match.Blaine Lattin, one of four Los Alamos wrestlers to advance to the title round Saturday, was the victim of the call. Sorenson said St. Michael’s Mike Lamb was incorrectly awarded two points for a takedown which, at best, occurred out bounds. Sorenson said the takedown didn’t happen at all.But Lattin, along with Kory Nelson, Kameron Sanders and Zak Wilde, took second for Los Alamos in Saturday’s meet. Brandon May, Seth Holsapple and Eric Carlson all finished third in their individual competition.Paul Martinez was fourth overall and might have finished third but couldn’t wrestle for the 112 consolation final because of a five-bout-per-day limit, which he would’ve exceeded.
